LONDON (AP) - Three-time Le Mans 24 Hour race winner Allan McNish is retiring after a 33-year career in which he was one of the fastest drivers in recent years.

The 43-year-old Scotsman won the most prestigious endurance race this year to add to victories in 1998 and 2008. Since moving to Audi in 2000 he has 66 top-three finishes, including 29 victories.

McNish says it's ''important to stop at the right time when I'm still fast and capable of doing the job.'' He adds that the ''timing feels right after winning Le Mans for a third time this year and claiming the world title.''

McNish started his career in karting and won American Le Mans Series titles in 2000, 2006 and 2007. He also drove a full season in Formula One for Toyota in 2002.
