IndyCar mechanic Evans dies after fight

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -Police are investigating the death of a Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing mechanic as a homicide.

David ``Davey'' Evans, 63, died early Sunday morning after a fight while leaving Kazablanka Bar, which is attached to the hotel where team members were staying during practice for the May 25 Indianapolis 500.

Police spokesman Sgt. Matthew Mount said Monday the Marion County coroner has ruled Evans' death a homicide caused by a stroke brought on by the fight and other health factors.

Police have questioned the man who was involved in the right with Evans, Mount said. He could potentially face charges of battery or involuntary manslaughter.

Newman/Haas/Lanigan general manager Brian Lisles said Evans had been with the team for more than 20 years and had worked on cars for Mario and Michael Andretti.

Lisles described Evans as a gentleman.

``His final moments in this world were totally atypical of how he led his life,'' Lisles said. ``He was a quiet, thoughtful person who just went out to have a meal and a beer and was walking back to the hotel.''

Lisles said the team's best tribute to Evans would be a successful race and season. The team's drivers are Graham Rahal and Justin Wilson.9
