Wilder takes care of Scott in first round

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico (AP) - Deontay Wilder remained undefeated with his 31st straight knockout, stopping Malik Scott in the first round in their heavyweight fight Saturday night.

Wilder landed a solid left and followed with a quick right that sent Scott (36-2-1) crumpling to the canvas 1:36 after the opening bell. Scott made a move to get up from his knees, but referee Roberto Ramirez Jr. counted him out.

The crowd of more than 10,100 at Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum was solidly behind the electric Wilder, but many seemed unconvinced as the knockout sequence was replayed on the big screens.

The 28-year-old Wilder has surged into the spotlight as a stoppage artist in the pro ranks.

''My power is crazy,'' Wilder said. ''It's unstoppable. It's like a missile.''

The quick win put him in position for a WBC heavyweight title shot against the winner of the Bermane Stiverne and Chris Arreola fight this year.

Wilder downplayed questions that he has yet to be tested.

''All the tests are in the gym. I work my butt off there to come out here to make it look easy,'' he said.

Wilder, a Tuscaloosa, Ala., native who didn't start fighting until he was 21, is the last American boxer to medal in an Olympics. He won bronze in Beijing in 2008.
