NEW YORK (AP) -Ali Oubaali stopped Chris Fernandez in the eighth round of a 10-round bout Wednesday night at the Aviator Club in Brooklyn.

Oubaali (22-3, 18 knockouts), a 137-pounder from France now fighting out of New York, outclassed Fernandez of Salt Lake City throughout and finished him off at 1:39 of the eighth round after opening a deep cut over Fernandez's left eye in the seventh.

Oubaali pounded away at the eye of Fernandez (15-5-1) in the next round, and referee Steve Willis stopped the bout.

In another fight, Zuri Lawrence, from Wappinger Falls, upset Polish-born Albert Sosnowski, now fighting out of Britain, in a unanimous eight-round decision that didn't produce a knockdown. The bout was changed from a 10-rounder earlier Wednesday without reason.

The 241-pound Lawrence, who had lost his previous two bouts, improved to 24-14-4. Sosnowski, a 223-pounder who had won 24 straight fights, fell to 43-2.
