WBA president clears Guzman to fight
October 1, 2008
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) -Joan Guzman was cleared by the WBA to fight after the Dominican boxer failed to make weight for a bout last month.
Guzman had tried to lose weight but became dehydrated and was unable to meet the 135-pound limit for a Sept. 13 fight against American Nate Campbell in Biloxi, Miss. The fight was for the lightweight titles of the WBA, IBF and WBO.
Guzman registered 138 1/2 pounds and was given two hours to weigh in again, but he never returned to the scale.
``We are sorry about what happened several weeks ago in Biloxi,'' WBA president Gilberto Mendoza said in a statement Wednesday from a WBA convention. ``The doors are open for Joan to fight.''
Guzman (28-0, 17 knockouts) had vacated his WBO junior lightweight crown for the chance to fight Campbell (32-5-1, 25 KOs).
