Alabama’s Mark Ingram (+500) had 1,658 rushing yards (including their bowl game) last year on the way to winning the Heisman Trophy. He might not get as many touches this year with talented backs like Trent Richardson behind him.
Pittsburgh’s Dion Lewis (+500) had 1,799 rushing yards as a freshman and we all know how coach Dave Wannstedt likes to run the ball. He’s listed at 195 pounds, so can he take the pounding again over a whole season?
Virginia Tech’s Ryan Williams (+500) had 1,655 rushing yards, but Darren Evans is recovered from his knee injury and will be battling for carries. That makes Williams seem slightly overvalued at these odds.
Oregon’s LaMichael James (+600) was seventh in the country with 1,546 yards. The team will need a big effort again with uncertainty at quarterback. However, James is suspended for the first game.
Wisconsin’s John Clay (+700) is a bruiser at 255 pounds and continues to run behind one of the best offensive lines in the country. He had 1,517 yards and will get plenty of carries once again.
Oklahoma’s DeMarco Murray (+700) is as talented as any back in the country. He only gained 705 rushing yards, but that’s because of health issues and splitting carries with the departed Chris Brown. Murray is feeling good and ready to make a run at the rushing title.
Oregon State’s Jacquizz Rodgers (+700) is only 5-foot-7, but he rushed for 1,440 yards as a sophomore. The diminutive Rodgers doesn’t seem to get worn down by carries, but that’s always a concern.
