The Yankees and Red Sox renew baseball's best rivalry for a three-game set on Friday night, with New York holding a 6-3 edge so far in 2012. The Yankees haven't won a season series with their rivals since 2007, although there have been three ties in that stretch.
The Red Sox are in a bit of disarray amid reports that players have gone to ownership to complain about first-year manager Bobby Valentine. Yahoo! Sports reported that a group of players were very critical of Valentine at a July 26 meeting with ownership and that they no longer wanted to play for him. ESPN.com reported that 17 players took part in the meeting. Valentine then met with ownership on Aug. 4 and eventually got a public vote of confidence. But that's never a good thing.
Back in April when the Red Sox were really struggling, Bovada released a prop on whether Valentine would manage Game 1 of the 2013 season with Boston. No was at -200 and yes at +150. Yes got the lean back then, but things could be going downhill fast for Bobby V.
Boston has supposed aces Jon Lester (6-10, 5.20) and Josh Beckett (5-10, 5.19) scheduled to take the mound Saturday and Sunday, respectively, in the Bronx, but neither has pitched like an ace this year. The Sox are 16-27 overall in their starts in 2012. If Boston was winning only around 60 percent of their starts it would be in the AL East race and a wild-card leader.
Beckett will face the Yanks' hottest pitcher in the ESPN national Sunday night game in Hiroki Kuroda (11-8, 3.06). He dominated the Rangers on Tuesday with a complete-game two-hit shutout. That made him the first Yankees pitcher to throw a shutout and allow two hits or fewer since 2006. Kuroda is the first Yankee to throw two complete-game shutouts in a season in seven years. That's rather hard to believe when you consider the caliber of Yankees pitchers since then.
The other live betting options this weekend are Rays-Angels (Friday), Rangers-Blue Jays (Saturday and Sunday) and Giants-Padres (Sunday).
