MLB Series Picks
June 28, 2013
It’s Friday and that means it’s time to look at the weekend series’ across MLB and figure out which teams have a good chance at coming away with a series victory. Here are two that I’m looking at:
Detroit (-145) vs. Tampa Bay (+115)
Detroit projected pitchers: Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Rick Porcello
Tampa Bay projected pitchers: Alex Colome, Chris Archer, Jeremy Hellickson
The Detroit Tigers come into Tampa Bay an angry team after getting swept at home by the Angels and they will likely take out some frustration on the Rays.
On paper, Detroit has a huge advantage in the starting pitching this weekend and I don’t believe they’ll squander it. Starting off any series with Scherzer and Verlander is tough for any opponent and Tampa should struggle. Only Yunel Escobar, James Loney and Kelly Johnson have decent career numbers against Scherzer and they aren’t likely to provide enough offense on their own to get a W tonight. Against Detroit you typically have to score 4+ runs and that’s something Tampa’s only done five times in their past 10 contests.
However the biggest advantage Detroit has this weekend is the fact that they don’t have to face Tampa’s studs in their pitching staff. Colome and Archer are young guys that will be hit hard by Detroit’s veteran lineup and Hellickson is pitching better but he’s still not going to be feared.
The Tigers have lost three in a row and that’s a few too many for a team that’s trying to repeat as American League Champions. After a long homestand that ended with the Angels sweep it’s likely a good thing that this team takes their show on the road and gets away from the hounding local media for a while. With their lineup and projected starters, there is no reason to believe they can’t win this series after the first two contests.
San Francisco (+115) vs. Colorado (-145)
San Francisco projected starters: Barry Zito, Matt Cain, Madison Bumgarner
Colorado projected starters: Jhoulys Chacin, Jorge De La Rosa, N/A
Speaking of angry teams, the San Francisco Giants are frustrated as well after getting swept by the hated Dodgers this week. The Giants have lost four straight games heading into tonight but they’ve got to be feeling confident against a team they’ve already beaten six times this year.
The Giants are small underdogs tonight but it’ll likely be the only time they are getting plus-money this weekend. Zito is more than capable of getting the job done if he is on and although he’s struggled lately, he and the Giants are 5-1 SU in his last six starts against the Rockies.
San Francisco has their two best pitchers going after tonight and they should get at least one of those games at a bare minimum. The Giants were caught by Miami last weekend looking ahead to that Dodgers series but it didn’t pan out for San Francisco and they’ve got to change something.
I believe they find a way to get back in the win column multiple times this weekend against a Rockies team that is still missing Troy Tulowitzki.
