With no clear cut first pick, correctly predicting the first five picks will be a challenge so make sure you do your homework.
Sportsbook.com’s Mini Mock Draft
1. Miami Dolphins- Jake Long, Michigan, OT Finishing the regular season with a lone victory, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the Fins need a ton of help. Defensive minded Bill Parcels is running the show in Miami so DE Chris Long would also be a logical choice for the top spot. However, Jake Long has the potential to be a 10 year All-Pro at the ever important position of Left Tackle. At 6’7 and 315 pounds, Long wowed scouts by bench pressing 225 pounds 37 times at the combines. Sportsbook.com has Jake Long at 5-8 to go in the first position.
2. St. Louis Rams- Chris Long, Virginia, DE The son of Hall of Famer Howie Long has all of the tools to make an immediate impact on opposing QB’s. Although not an elite athlete, the reigning ACC Defensive Player of the Year, combines an impressive combination of size, strength, quickness and toughness. With 34 year old Leonard Little coming off and injury plagued one sack season, DE makes perfect sense for the Rams to invest in. For that matter, don’t count out LB/DE Vernon Gholston out of Ohio State. If Long is the pick at #2, he’ll payout at a healthy 3-1.
3. Atlanta Falcons- Glenn Dorsey, LSU, DT Like the other teams at the top of the Draft, the Falcons need a ton of help. If Jake Long is off the board as expected, the Falcons will look to improve the defensive line with Glenn Dorsey. QB Matt Ryan could be another route but Atlanta might be better served scooping up Brian Brohm in the second round as their future signal caller. Atlanta ranked 26th in the NFL in rushing defense so the 6’2” 300 pound Dorsey would be just what the doctor ordered. Sportsbook.com’s payout for Dorsey going in the 3rd slot is currently 7-2.
4. Oakland Raiders- Darren McFadden, Arkansas, RB The Raiders definitely have bigger needs, namely lineman on both sides of the ball. However, Al Davis loves his athletes and despite the breakout season Justin Fargas had, McFadden might be too talented to pass on. At 6’1” 210 pounds while running a 4.3 40 yard dash, the former Razorback has all of the tools to be an elite running back at the next level. If it’s not McFadden, look for the Raiders to go for Dorsey if he slips or the athletic Gholston. McFadden at #4 will pay bettors 5-2.
5. Kansas City Chiefs- Ryan Clady, Boise State, OT The Chiefs could go any number of ways including QB (Ryan) or DE (Gholston); however, it is imperative to get there running game back to where it was in years past if they are going to sniff the .500 mark. After averaging 133.9 yards per game on the ground in 2006, the Chiefs ranked dead last in the NFL last season with a pathetic 78 yards per game. Clady is considered the next best OL prospect after Long but also don’t count out the versatile and powerful Brandon Albert from Virginia. Also, don’t be surprised if the Chiefs trade down as Albert and OT Jeff Otah out of Pittsburgh will most likely be available later.
