Sunday Night Baseball

St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs
Sunday, 8:05 pm Eastern – ESPN

The St. Louis Cardinals will try and gain some ground on National League Central Division leading Chicago on Sunday night. This series against the Cardinals is the first time the Cardinals and Cubs have met at Wrigley Field this season. St. Louis knows that this is a chance to gain ground on their division rivals. "We know what's ahead of us," said manager Tony La Russa, "Ten games, three tough places to play. This club has risen to the occasion all year long, and I expect them to do that again." After this series against the Cubs the Cardinals have four games at Florida and three games at Cincinnati as part of this 10-game road trip.

In early July the Cubs won two of three games at St. Louis. The Cardinals are trying to return the favor this weekend. "Anytime you're facing a first-place team, it's always going to be a tough challenge," said Ryan Ludwick. "It's going to be a dogfight." The Cardinals can’t afford to get swept as that would put them too far behind to be a serious contender. "There's no doubt about it, they're big games," Ludwick said. "But getting back to the point of intensity, it should be the same intensity no matter who you're playing. I think everyone in here knows it's a big series."

The Cardinals send Chris Carpenter to the mound on Sunday while the Cubs counter with Ryan Dempster. Carpenter is still getting back to form after missing the last year of action. He has pitched a total of nine innings in his two starts but has only given up one earned run. Dempster is 12-5 this season with a 2.93 ERA. He went just five innings on Monday but that was due to the game going into a rain delay. Dempster is 10-2 at home this season. The Cardinals are now 20-31 when their opponent scores first but 44-22 when they score the first run.
