Sportsbook.com bettors are pounding the Dallas Cowboys for this weekend’s matchup with the Cleveland Browns.
No game on the site is attracting the attention that the Cowboys and Browns are getting and no team is being backed like the Cowboys are for this game.
A resounding 95% of early bettors are backing the Cowboys and the result of the overwhelming support has seen Dallas move from an early three-point favorite to a six-point favorite in Cleveland.
“The one-sided betting is a little surprising considering how well the Browns played last year,” said Sportsbook.com spokesman Dave Staley. “In addition, Dallas’ offense sputtered and averaged just 12.3 points over their last four games of the season.”
Another game that bettors are keying on is the AFC East showdown between the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins.
“It’s surprising how popular this game is considering these teams combined for just five wins last year, but obviously everyone is interested in Favre’s debut,” said Staley.
Not only are Sportbook.com members interested in Favre but they are putting their money on the future Hall of Fame quarterback and his new team. The early numbers show that 92% of early bettors are betting the Jets will cover the three-point spread in Miami.
However, Miami is a better team than the one that won just once last year and they also have a new quarterback in Chad Pennington. Pennington, released from the Jets when they acquired Favre last month, has a lot to prove and a victory over the team that cut him, and the quarterback that replaced him, would be a great way to start the season.
“Pennington playing against his old squad is an interesting storyline,” said Staley. “There is a revenge factor there and I don’t think enough members are taking that into account.”
The most surprising development out of the Week 1 early betting at Sportsbook.com is the amount of bettors willing to back the Detroit Lions as a road favorite.
Detroit, 7-9 a season ago after starting the season 6-2, heads to Atlanta to play the rebuilding Falcons team as three-point favorites. The line opened with the Lions listed as one-point faves but, as with the other games attracting wagers, bettors are favoring the road favorites.
But, in a week where anything can happen, that might not be the best decision.
“I realize Atlanta was brutal last year and is starting a rookie quarterback in Matt Ryan, but I just don’t see all the respect Detroit is getting,” said Staley. “I’ll start backing Detroit as road favorites when they actually turn the corner, which they were supposed to turn two years ago.”
