How did it all turn out?

On the college scene, No. 2 Alabama almost let down their fans, but those who backed them with their money weren’t so lucky (and yes, we realize many are the same), as Kentucky put a real scare in the Crimson Tide. ‘Bama won 17-14, never looked like they were going to get enough done to cover the 15.5 points they were favored by. Congrats to Wildcat bettors.

While Alabama remained steady as the AP polls No. 2 team after that close call, they did pay for it a little in the USA Today rankings, dropping to fourth.

In other SEC action, it’s shaping up to be a season for the ages for the Vanderbilt Commodores.

Vandy has cracked the Top 25 for the first time in forever (currently a consensus 19) and this past weekend, listed as a 4-point underdog, the Commodores upset the No. 13 Auburn Tigers by a final of 14-13; the win upped Vanderbilt’s record straight up and against the spread to 5-0 in the last five games.

Over in the ACC, it was a good old shootout between the Florida State Seminoles and the Miami Hurricanes (remember when these two teams used to be relevant on the national scene?)

In what was one of the more entertaining matchups of the weekend, the ‘Noles and ‘Canes almost doubled the Total (40.5) with 80 combined points in a game that ended 41-39 in favor of FSU.

In the NFL, all eyes were on the Miami Dolphins - okay we’re kidding, they weren’t – but the Dolphins were grabbing some attention as they took the field again for the first time since pulling off the upset, as a 12.5 point dog, in their 38-13 beat down of the Patriots.

The task wasn’t any easier this week, as they faced the San Diego Chargers, who hit the field as 6.5-point road favorites. But the Dolphins were up to their tricks again, using the same Wildcat formation that gave the Pats fits before the bye, the home dog pulled out a another win (17-10) over a top AFC opponent.

The win was Miami’s fourth victory against an AFC West opponent in five tries.

How ‘bout them Redskins?

Picked by many so-called experts to be the bottom dwellers of the NFC East, the Washington Redskins have been having fun sticking it to all the nay sayers, jumping out to a 4-1 SU and ATS record so far.

Their latest win came against division rival Philadelphia, a 23-17 victory where the Redskins covered as 6.5-point underdog and tied the Dallas Cowboys for second in the division.

Meanwhile, the NFC East leading New York Giants remained the lone undefeated team in the conference, easily brushing aside a sad looking Seahawk team. There was little suspense of whether they would cover the 7 points in their 44-6 win over Seattle.

The week finished off in New Orleans with a Saints team dropping a 30-27 decision, as a 3-point favorite, to the Vikings on Monday night.

In the MLB playoffs, the clock struck midnight for the Milwaukee Brewers and the Chicago Cubs this past weekend and they were left with pumpkins, pondering what could’ve been.

The Curse of the Goat continued for the Cubbies as they were swept in three games by the Los Angeles Dodgers and in the decisive third game, the Dodgers won 3-1 and paid out on the Money line as a +116 underdog.

In the playoffs for the first time since 1982, the Milwaukee Brewers’ 2008 playoff campaign only went slightly better than the Cubs’ as the “Brew Crew” fell to the Philadelphia Phillies in four games; Milwaukee was favored at -115 on the Money line in Game 4 but lost 6-2 to Philly.

Los Angeles and Philadelphia move on to face one another in the National League Championship Series and SPORTSBETTING.COM has the Phillies listed at -125 in Series betting and the Dodgers as +105 underdogs.

The Dodgers are the odds-on favorite to take the NL Pennant at -140 while the Phillies are listed at +140 to do the same.

It was a hell of a weekend with some upsets in the NFL and the NLCS matchup set in the MLB playoffs; let’s hope next weekend is every bit as good.
