With five races to go, the NASCAR circuit heads into the Martinsville Speedway on Sunday, for the Tums Quik Pak 500. The Chase for the Sprint Cup is getting tight with Jimmy Johnson holding a 69 point lead over hometown boy Jeff Burton.
Points leader Jimmy Johnson is coming off a disappointing 6th place finish on Saturday at the Bank Of America 500. Johnson will look to redeem himself this week and has had great success on this track in the past. "I feel good about Martinsville," Johnson said in a post-race interview Saturday night. "Right now I'm upset about tonight. But you know, tomorrow, Tuesday, whatever it is, I'll be ready for Martinsville. I think we'll be real good over there." Johnson has been unbelievable at Martinsville in the past. In thirteen Martinsville starts, Johnson has four wins, nine top five's, and eleven top ten finishes.
Jeff Burton is coming in to this race "red-hot" after winning at Lowe's Speedway on Saturday night. Burton is the home town boy, growing up an hour away from Martinsville. He won his very first race at Martinsville, and grew up practicing at the track. "There are a lot of people who supported us when no one knew who we were who are still in the stands today. We take a lot of pride in that. It is different racing at your hometown track. There's an extra level of intensity that comes with it. You always want to win in your backyard." In past performances at Martinsville, Burton has one win and ten top five finishes.
The Tums QuikPak 500 will be run on Sunday and will be televised on ABC.
