For the second time this year the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tennessee Titans will match up in an AFC South Division game. Less than a month ago (October 4th), the Jaguars blew out the Titans in Jacksonville by a score of 37-17. With that win and two others (Houston and St. Louis) the Jaguars find themselves at (3-3) and with hopes of making the playoffs.
The Titans on the other hand find themselves at a very disappointing (0-6) and a team trying to find out what they’re made of in wake of a dismal season?
Last year, Jeff Fisher’s squad got off to an NFL best (10-0) start but this season every move they’ve made has back-fired. "We've had a week to do some different things and considering the circumstances we're in right now with the record, there's things that you need to do differently," Fisher said. "Let's just say I am not going to be as specific and open-ended from a competitive standpoint." Fisher made it clear that he remained confident in Collins, who has completed 54.8 percent of his passes while throwing five touchdowns and eight interceptions. Young saw mop-up duty the past two games, going 0-for-5 with an interception. Last week Collins said he expected to remain the starter but pressure from owner Bud Adams has made Vince Young the starter.
The Tennessean reported this week that Titans owner Bud Adams spoke to Fisher during the bye week, telling the coach he preferred that Young start against the Jags (3-3) over Collins, who went 2 for 12 for minus-7 yards and an interception in a 59-0 loss to New England on Oct. 18. It was the largest margin of defeat since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. Young went 0 for 2 with an interception in relief of Collins.
For "competitive reasons," Fisher has declined to say who his starter will be. Tennessee hasn't scored a touchdown in eight quarters.
"We've had a week to do some different things. And especially considering the circumstances we're in right now with the record, there's things that you need to do differently," Fisher said. "Let's just say I'm not going to be as specific and [will be] open-ended from a competitive standpoint."
The Titans (0-6) have carried only two quarterbacks this season, but this week they added former USC standout John David Booty. Young replaced Collins during an 0-5 start in 2006, and he went on to earn Offensive Rookie of the Year honors as the Titans finished 8-8. He regressed the following season, throwing nine TDs while getting picked off 17 times.
Adams has long considered Young to be the Titans' quarterback of the future. He is due a $4.25 million roster bonus in 2010 when his salary cap number is slated to be $14.21 million.
"I have been wanting (Fisher) to play Vince Young more because Collins has been having his problems out there,'' Adams said. "I just think we need to find out how well (Young) can do.
"If you don't play the guy and lose all your games, it is hard for you to see what he can do for you. Vince has won a lot of games for us.''
The Jacksonville Jaguars at (3-3) feel they’re a team moving in the right direction. QB David Garrard has thrown for just 5 touchdown passes in six games while also being picked off 3 times. Now although Garrard only has a completion percentage of 61.3%, his strength has been able to connect with a variety of receivers. Three Jacksonville receivers, (Torry Holt, Mike Sims-Walker, and Maurice Jones-Drew) have 20 receptions or more.
The Jaguars are one of the few NFL teams to rely primarily on just one running back. With Fred Taylor now in New England, Maurice Jones-Drew has gained 463 yards, while scoring 8 touchdowns.
On the defensive side of the ball the Tennessee Titans have been a mess, ranking last in total defense, giving up 33 points per game. The Jaguars on the other hand have struggled as well in 2009, ranked 24 out of 32 teams, giving up 24 points per game.
