No. 9 Texas is a 1 ½-point home dog at BroburySports. The game is on ESPN at 9 pm ET, right after No. 2 Villanova (+5) at No. 6 West Virginia.
Texas (19-4 SU, 8-11 ATS) is 2-4 straight-up (SU) since opening up the season 17-0 and becoming the nation’s No. 1 team. The latest indignity was an 80-71 loss at Oklahoma on Saturday as 6 ½-point favorites.
The Sooners had an 18-point lead at half-time and hung on from there. Texas went just 10-of-27 from the charity strip, a true sign of a struggling team. Forward Damion James was the main culprit at 4-of-13.
The Longhorns now return home where they’re 12-1 SU. The only home loss was their last game, an 80-77 overtime defeat against underrated Baylor.
Texas is 0-4 ATS at home in the Big 12 and 1-9 ATS in its last 10 games overall.
Big test for the Jayhawks
Kansas (22-1 SU, 9-10-1 ATS) has played two games since re-gaining the top-ranking. They needed overtime to win (72-66) at Colorado despite being 14 ½-point ‘chalk.’ They were at home versus Nebraska on Saturday, a 75-64 win as 21-point favorites.
Kansas is 0-3 ATS in its last three games and 2-4-1 ATS in true road games.
The key matchup in this game is down low with Texas’ Dexter Pittman (11.4 PPG) trying to battle the tandem of Cole Aldrich and Marcus Morris. Pittman hasn’t gotten the ball much the last nine games, averaging 6.5 PPG. He had eight points against Oklahoma and is not likely to have much more on Monday.
That puts a lot of pressure on James (17.8 PPG, 11 RPG) to score big every night. Texas is scoring 84.1 PPG (more than Kansas), but are at 74.7 PPG the last seven contests.
The Jayhawks (83.7 PPG, fourth in the nation) have a much more balanced attack with four players in double digits. Senior guard Sherron Collins is the leader at 15.6 PPG.
Texas won the last meeting in Austin, 72-69 as 5 ½-point favorites. That was back in February, 2008.
