COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEEK ONE POSTGAME

By Christian Alexander

It's always interesting to see what happens in Week One and the ripples caused throughout college football in terms of perceptions and ultimately the Week Two lines. Often times everything that the "experts" think about a program can be trashed in one week with a bad performance. If that performance happens to an aberration and not a true reflection of a team, that can cause a great opportunity for bettors in the coming week.

An obvious example of this from this past weekend is Cal. While I was never high enough on the Golden Bears to mention them as a contender for the national championship, there is no doubt in my mind they are a better team than the one that was thumped by Tennessee 35-18 on Saturday. Should be interesting to see what number comes out in Week Two for the Cal/Minnesota game. I know I will be following that.

Another team I will be watching in future weeks is Idaho. Now with coach Dennis Erickson at the helm, the Vandals gave Michigan State all they could handle this past weekend before losing 27-17 as 30 point dogs! Idaho is sure to be an underdog in almost every game this season and could offer some value if they put up similar efforts. Bad Beat of the Week: Tough loss for those holding a Baylor (+7) ticket. The Bears had control of TCU at the half, leading 7-0 and having knocked the Horned Frogs starting QB (Jeff Ballard) out of the game. But a couple costly turnovers in the 3rd quarter and a miscommunication on an 84 yard TD pass by TCU let victory, for both Baylor and those who bet on them, slip down the drain as TCU won 17-7.

Finally, did anyone catch the end of that Hawaii / Alabama game? In the 4th quarter of that game Warriors QB Colt Brennan was driving his team down the field for the potential game-tying touchdown. During a timeout, Brennan went over to talk with coach June Jones and as he made his way back onto the field he very casually lifted his face mask and threw up several times all over the grass at Bryant-Denny. The announcers explained that this is something Brennan is known for. I had to do some research and sure enough, here is the low-down and DIRTY from the Honolulu Star-Bulletin: Brennan can really throw (up)
