I know the world of sports is buzzing with controversy right now. Whether its Barry breaking the big record and the whole steroids issue, Vick and the dog fighting indictment or the point-shaving referee scandal in the NBA - that stuff makes for great headlines and talk. However, I don't know about you but I'm over it already. Let's move on to something that really matters. NFL training camps.
Now that we're in late July, camps are opening all over the NFL. Just click here to find out when your favorite team is getting down to business.
As we look toward this NFL season, here are five things I'm anxious to find out:
1) Is Jay Cutler the real deal? I loved Cutler at Vandy. You could feel pretty good taking the Commodores and the points with him under center. His draft stock really took off his senior year. Now that he is the starter in Denver, its time to see whether he can do it at the highest level.
2) Will Randy Moss wreck the Pats? Moss has been a huge distraction wherever he has played. It will be very interesting to see whether a veteran team with lots of winning experience like New England can make a good teammate and producer.
3) Can the Saints do it again? What a story in 2006 when New Orleans came out of nowhere to make a nice run into the playoffs. Now its expected - the Saints are currently the fifth choice at 12/1 to win the Super Bowl - and how Drew Brees and company handle the expectations will determine a lot.
4) Double digit wins for Detroit? QB Jon Kitna and the Lions have been making some headlines lately by projecting the team would win at least 10 games. That's mighty big talk from a franchise that has done a lot of nothing over the past five years or so. I'll say this for the Lions, with RB's Kevin Jones and Tatum Bell combined with WR's Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson, they have some incredible offensive weapons on that team.
5) Rookie runner in Buffalo? Rookie RB Marshawn Lynch was a huge stud at Cal. Now he is in Buffalo and thanks to an off-season trade shipping Willis McGahee to Baltimore, Lynch appears to be the opening day starter for the Bills. That's usually not a great recipe for success for someone in year one in the NFL but something tells me this rookie could be special.
More later on this weekend. Until then, best of luck.
