Remember what I said in last week's postgame about assumptions made after Week One and how it would affect the lines in Week Two? Well, it sure seems that a lot of folks really believed that Notre Dame's hard-fought victory over Georgia Tech (14-10) was a sign that the Irish were "over-hyped" and a "disappointment". Result? Bettors could get a very attractive price (-7) on Notre Dame in their home opener against Penn State and coasted to an easy winner behind the Irish, 41-17.
Bad Beat of the Week: Clemson (-2.5) sure seemed to have their game at Boston College in hand several times last weekend but they couldn't put the Eagles away and eventually lost 34-33. Several big plays went BC's way including a 96-yard kickoff return for a TD. Even then, Clemson seemed ready to win the game and cover the number in the first OT as they had first and goal from the 3 yard line. But the Tigers couldn't capitalize, eventually settling for a FG and heading into OT number two. The end was painful for Clemson when Jad Dean had an extra-point blocked that would have sent the game into a third OT.
Finally, hats off to Air Force for a gutsy effort this past weekend in Knoxville when they took the Volunteers right to the wire before losing 31-30. In a classic "sandwich" game, Tennessee was fresh off a big win over Cal and probably over-looking the Falcons with a big Florida game on deck next weekend. They almost paid dearly for it. I have to admire coach Fisher DeBerry's decision at the end of regulation to go for two and the outright win instead of kicking the extra point and heading into OT. However, his explanation that "we didn't come here to tie" doesn't really make sense considering there is overtime.
