I'm wrapping up a long Saturday of college football by watching Georgia Tech and Clemson (Tigers are literally runing away with it) and thought I would put down a few thoughts while they are fresh in my mind.
First off, you have to tip your hat to the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers who soundly beat Pittsburgh today 20-10 as 6.5 point underdogs - and a very tasy +240 on the money line. The more I see this team play the more impressed I am. Coach Greg Schiano's defense proved they are for real by pretty much shutting down the high-octane Panther's offense led by QB Tyler Palko. And remember all that fuss about Northern Illinois RB Garrett Wolfe not getting respect? Well, I think Ray Rice of Rutgers now holds the title of most talented and least respected RB in the nation. This kid is special. I'm not ready to say the Knights can shock the world and beat Louisville and/or West Virginia but I'm beginning to think those might be a couple of very entertaining games.
I know it's been one brutal season for Coach John L. Smith and Michigan State but you can't accuse the Spartans of quitting today. Down 38-3 in the 3rd quarter to Northwestern, MSU rallied for 38 unanswered to shock the Wildcats by three. The amazing comeback set some kind of NCAA record for biggest deficit overcome that late in a game. I should also mention that Baylor too had an amazing comeback, scoring 19 unanswered in the 4th quarter to nip Kansas 36-35.
Best game of the day had to be the slugfest in Lincoln, NE as the Cornhuskers and Texas squared off. Early it looked like Texas (-5) was going to pull away but Nebraska had a great second half and actually led 20-19 until Ryan Bailey's 22-yard field goal with 23 seconds won the game for the Horns. With the cold weather (temps in the 30's), combined with occasional rain and gusty winds, the under (48) was a solid play.
Bad Beats: It looked like players holding an Iowa ticket were going to be happy today. The line in the Iowa/Michigan game opened at 12.5 before it was bet up to Michigan -14. At the start of the 4th quarter it was just 10-6 Michigan but the Wolverines tacked on 10 in the last quarter to cover most action.
Oklahoma - in typical Bob Stoops fashion - scored a meaningless touchdown with just seconds left in their game with Colorado to allow the Sooners (-14) to cover the number against the Buffaloes 24-3.
