Preview: Cougars (23-12) at Ducks (23-10)

For an Oregon team that's already among the national leaders in scoring, welcoming back two more talented players gives coach Dana Altman a "great problem."

The Ducks could be headed for a shootout if BYU can get its prolific offense back on track.

Altman will try to get a handle on his loaded rotation when No. 13 Oregon plays the first of two final non-conference home games Saturday night against the Cougars.

Following a nine-game suspension for selling university-supplied apparel, Dominic Artis and Ben Carter made their season debuts in a 91-63 win over visiting UC Irvine on Tuesday.

Artis, who averaged 8.5 points and a team-high 3.2 assists in starting 25 of his 28 games last season, had five points, eight rebounds and three assists in 26 minutes off the bench for the Ducks (10-0).

"He's just got to get himself in game shape," Altman said after Oregon extended its best start since opening 13-0 in 2006-07. "I'm glad we got him a lot of minutes."

Johnathan Loyd has played well since taking over as the starting point guard during Artis' absence. He averaged 15.7 points and 9.0 assists in the first three games this month before having four points and three assists in a season-low 12 minutes against the Anteaters.

Altman said he's more concerned with who will make plays and finish games than who will start in the backcourt.

Guard Joseph Young, averaging a team-best 19.3 points, will likely remain a starter after shooting 20 for 34 overall and 7 for 11 from 3-point range in the last three games.

Forward Mike Moser has scored 17.7 per game over that span while shooting 57.6 percent and going 7 for 14 from beyond the arc. Carter also could be a factor in the frontcourt after registering four points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block in 19 minutes Tuesday.

'Having a lot of talent never seemed to be a problem on any team I've ever played on, but we'll see," Moser said. "I think we have the right blend of guys so I don't think it should be an issue."

The Ducks will get a look at how those pieces fit together in home games against BYU (8-4) and Morgan State before opening Pac-12 play at Utah on Jan. 2. They're hoping the added depth plays into their hands defensively against the high-scoring Cougars.

While Oregon ranks third nationally with 89.3 points per game, fourth with a 52.6 field-goal percentage and third in 3-point shooting at 44.4 percent, BYU is fifth with an 88.6 scoring average.

"We're going to press, we're going to pressure them, we're going to play hard," Loyd told the team's official website. "We're going to keep coming at them."

The Cougars, however, will likely have to regain their shooting stroke after making 32.8 percent from the field, 5 of 19 from long range and 17 of 31 from the free-throw line in an 81-64 loss at Utah last Saturday.

Tyler Haws is among the NCAA leaders with 22.3 points per game, but he'll try to bounce back after finishing with a season-low 14 on 3-of-11 shooting.

The Cougars' previous three losses came against ranked opponents by an average of 8.0 points. Despite being competitive, BYU has dropped seven straight and is 1-12 in its last 13 versus Top 25 teams.

Though Oregon leads the all-time series 12-8, the Cougars snapped a four-game losing streak with a 79-65 win in Salt Lake City on Dec. 3, 2011.
