Rashad Bishop made all three free throws after being fouled beyond the arc to snap a 51-51 tie with 5:44 remaining, and Cincinnati never relinquished its lead.
Cincinnati's Lance Stephenson scored 10 points.
Jonathan Mitchell scored 14 points and added seven rebounds for Rutgers (9-4, 0-1), which couldn't survive an off-night from leading scorer Mike Rosario. He missed eight of his first nine shots and scored 12 points on 4 of 19 shooting.
