FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) - Yorel Hawkins scored 14 points and Fairfield clinched the regular-season championship in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Wednesday night with a 61-54 win over Marist.
Though the Stags (21-5, 14-2) never trailed against a team that has lost 11 straight, they fought for their first conference regular-season title since 1995-96. Fairfield led 34-24 at halftime after shooting 53.6 percent from the field (15 of 28) in the first 20 minutes, while Marist (4-24, 3-13) mustered only 36.4-percent accuracy (8 of 22).
The Stags led by 13 in the second half and the Red Foxes chopped it to six. They rebuilt it to 15 on Colin Nickerson's dunk with 3:32 left, but another Marist run cut it to seven.
Marist outrebounded Fairfield 35-26, but its 17 turnovers to Fairfield's eight hurt. The Stags outscored the Red Foxes 15-4 on those miscues.
Dorvell Carter led Marist with 19 points.
