Recap: Oklahoma , Texas

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The chance to add a little more misery to Oklahoma's tough season is always a welcome one for Texas.

The No. 12 Longhorns dumped another big loss on their rivals Saturday with a 66-46 win that sent the Sooners to an 0-3 start in the Big 12.

Jordan Hamilton scored 17 points and freshman forward Tristan Thompson added 15 points and eight rebounds. Thompson scored 11 in the second half as Texas (14-3, 2-0 Big 12) steadily pulled away.

Andrew Fitzgerald scored 18 for the Sooners (8-9), who are 0-8 away from home this season and showed little chance of ending that streak in a game in which they never led. Oklahoma shot just 1 of 15 from 3-point range and was held to its lowest point total of the season.

Gary Johnson scored 14 points and Cory Joseph 10 for the Longhorns, who held Oklahoma to its lowest point total of the season. The Sooners missed 10 of their first 13 shots and scored only 19 points in the first half.

``It's going to be tough for us to beat anyone if we can't make shots,' Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel said.

Since Connecticut's Kemba Walker made a from-the-hip 3-pointer in overtime a week earlier, the Longhorns have held their last two opponents to 1-of-26 shooting from long range.

Texas didn't have any shooting problems of its own against the Sooners, with four of its first six baskets coming from behind the arc. Hamilton made three in the half, the last giving Texas a 12-point lead.

The Sooners cut it to seven before Texas closed the half with a 3-pointer by Joseph and a short jumper by Johnson to make it 27-19 at halftime.

Oklahoma kept giving Hamilton all kinds of room to shoot from the wings. He was left completely alone for a 3-pointer just seconds into the second half and made another a minute later to put Texas ahead by 10.

``I thought it was Christmas out there,' Hamilton said.

Keeping track of Hamilton was something Oklahoma worked on before the game.

``We lost him twice, knowing the great shooter he is,' Sooners guard Cade Davis said. ``That got them going, gave them momentum and got the crowd into it.'

Things just kept getting worse for the Sooners.

Texas guard Dogus Balbay got his second steal off Carl Blair and Blair knocked him to the floor and had to go to the bench with four fouls. A steal by Cory Johnson led to a layup and free throw by Balbay that put the Longhorns up 41-27. The Sooners had just seven assists against 15 turnovers.

``We talked at halftime that we wanted to come out and play as hard as we could the first 4 minutes. We made them feel us. We set the tempo,' Balbay said.

Capel said he thought the game was winnable until then.

``I thought we were right there at halftime,' Capel said. ``To get off to the start we had in the second half was mind-boggling to me.'

Thompson closed it out down the stretch. He converted a three-point play with a tough layup over Fitzgerald, then snared a crosscourt pass from Hamilton before twisting awkwardly to make another tough shot as Texas built the lead to 52-36 with just under 10 minutes left.

Texas has won nine of the last 11 meetings with the Sooners.

The Longhorns host another big rival, No. 14 Texas A&M, on Wednesday night. No one expects that one to be as easy as Saturday's game.

``We know what we have to do,' Hamilton said. ``We just have to come out and play hard.'
