RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -Kevin Anderson scored 16 of his 29 points in a blistering first half for Richmond and the Spiders held off No. 19 Temple down the stretch for a 71-54 victory Saturday.

Richmond (18-6, 7-2 Atlantic 10) shot 77 percent in the first half against one of the nation's top defensive teams and led by 23 points in the second half. The Spiders withstood a 19-4 burst by Temple and became the first team to surpass its scoring average against the Owls this season.

Temple (19-5, 7-2) lost for just the second time in 10 games and fell into a tie with the Spiders near the top of the conference standings.

Lavoy Allen led Temple with 17 points and 19 rebounds and Ramone Moore scored 17 points.

David Gonzalvez, who scored 36 points in a loss at Temple last season, added 13 points and seven rebounds for Richmond, and Ryan Butler scored 12 points. Richmond won despite being outrebounded 34-24, including 16-2 on the offensive end. The Owls managed just nine second-chance points.

Richmond led 44-26 at halftime and 53-30 with 14:58 to play, but Temple scored the next 12 points - nine by Allen - and 16 of 18 to cut the deficit to 55-46. It was the first time the Owls were within single digits since midway through the first half.

Anderson broke the drought with a driving basket for Richmond, and after Moore scored on a layup off a steal and hit two free throws, Anderson made two for the Spiders, again settling things down, and the Owls were unable to continue cutting into the lead.

The game featured two of the stingiest defensive teams in the country with the Owls holding opponents to 57 points per game and 27.4 percent 3-point shooting, both fifth-best nationally, and 38 percent shooting overall, and the Spiders shot holes in it quickly.

Already leading 20-13, they put together an 18-4 run to build a 38-17 lead 1:49 before halftime, shooting 77 percent overall and 73 percent from 3-point range, making 8 of 11.

Richmond, averaging 65.8 points, finished shooting 58 percent overall and 56 percent from behind the arc, making 9 of 16.
