PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) - Kadeem Jack had 18 points and Junior Etou scored the go-ahead basket with 40 seconds to play to lift Rutgers to a 71-66 win over Temple on Wednesday night.
Etou's conventional three-point play was the difference in a game that saw 17 lead changes, sending the Scarlet Knights (7-7) to a victory in the American Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Wally Judge and J.J. Moore contributed 12 points apiece and Myles Mack had 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists as Rutgers won its third straight.
Quentin DeCosey scored 25 points, but had just eight points after intermission for Temple (5-6), which has had five of its losses decided by six points or less.
Rutgers survived a red-hot spurt by Temple's Dalton Pepper, who scored all of his teams points during a 19-10 run that put the Owls ahead 61-59 with 4:44 to play.
Prior to his 19-point spurt, Pepper had gone scoreless on 0-for-8 shooting but made three layups, two 3-pointers, a dunk and all five of his free throw attempts during the nearly six-minute stretch. He finished with 19.
Jack's hook shot with 2:28 to play put the Scarlet Knights ahead 65-64 and the teams missed on four straight possessions before Anthony Lee put Temple on top with a layup.
Etou followed with his layup and free throw, and Will Cummings missed a layup that could've tied it for Temple with 20 seconds left.
Moore made two free throws with 16 seconds left to ice the game for Rutgers, which shot 45.9 percent from the field compared to 33.3 shooting by Temple.
