Florida State player carried off on stretcher

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Florida State's Terrance Shannon was carried off the court on a stretcher late in the Seminoles' game at Virginia on Saturday, but team doctor Bill Hamilton said the redshirt-junior forward appeared to have suffered a neck sprain.

Hamilton said Shannon was sent to UVA Medical Center as a precaution because he initially had weakness in his upper and lower extremities, but that his strength improved en route to the hospital and was all the way back a short time later.

Shannon was expected to stay overnight and undergo more precautionary tests, Hamilton said.

The 6-foot-8 forward went down with 3:58 remaining after appearing to hit his head against the thigh or hip of Virginia's Evan Nolte during a scramble under the Florida State basket. He remained on the floor motionless for nearly 10 minutes as first trainers and then paramedics attended to him.

He eventually was loaded onto a stabilizing backboard and then onto a stretcher and taken to the hospital.

Seminoles scoring leader Michael Snaer said the situation was unnerving, especially since Shannon has struggled with injuries before.

``You always worry when a guy like that goes down,'' Snaer said. ``This is a guy that's been haunted by injuries his whole career. You want to see him get better so we're really worried about him.''

Virginia won the game, 56-36, but coach Tony Bennett said the victory was ``sobering'' because of the injury.

``You see that, you can't feel as good as you'd like about a win like that. You hope and pray for their young man that that's not anything threatening or serious,'' Bennett said.
