HOUSTON (AP) - Aaric Murray scored 33 points and Jose Rodriguez added 25 as Texas Southern defeated Norfolk State 95-83 in the season opener for both teams Saturday night.
Rodriguez also had a game-high 11 rebounds.
Texas State led by as much as 22 before Malcolm Hawkins and Anell Alexis hit back-to-back 3-pointers to cut its lead to 12. Another 3-poiner by Hawkins made it 74-65 with 7:15 left.
Hawkins led Norfolk State, shooting 9 for 16 from the floor, including five 3-pointers on his way to 32 points. He's the first Spartan to score more than 30 points since January 2011. Riley Maye was the only other NSU player in double figures with a career-high 15 points.
It was Norfolk State's first game under head coach Robert Jones, and the first meeting between the schools.
