UMass gets past Providence in OT

AMHERST, Mass. (AP) - Derrick Gordon's put-back with 1.1 seconds left in overtime lifted 23rd-ranked Massachusetts to a 69-67 victory over Providence on Saturday night.

Gordon grabbed the rebound after a 3-point attempt by Trey Davis came up short. The Friars' Bryce Cotton had tied the score at 67 after connecting from beyond the arc with 37 seconds remaining in the extra session.

Cady Lalanne led UMass (11-1) with 14 points and 11 rebounds with Davis and Sampson Carter each scoring 12 points. Senior point guard Chaz Williams finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out with 1:36 remaining in regulation.

Cotton finished with 24 points, five rebounds and five assists for Providence (10-3). Tyler Harris had 16 points and nine rebounds, and LaDontae Henton added 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Friars forced regulation on the strength of a 13-3 run over the final 4:01 of the second half.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, which ended with Providence up 30-29. The Friars shot 12 for 28 from the field while the Minutemen were 12 for 32. Williams was scoreless in the opening half while Providence missed all seven of its 3-point attempts.

The Minutemen went up 10 points at the 12:50 mark second half and continued to remain up by that many points with 3:54 left. That's when the Friars rallied with Cotton leading the charge. The senior got the game-tying basket with 10 seconds remaining after driving past Lalanne and finishing at the rim.

Saturday was the 29th all-time meeting between the two New England schools. The Friars own a 22-7 advantage, though the Minutemen have now won the last two matchups. At last year's Puerto Rico Tip-Off, Massachusetts won at the buzzer, 77-75.

UMass sold out its first game at the Mullins Center since 2006 against Boston College. Saturday's crowd was 9,493.
