We're inching our way closer to March Madness, and today, we're going to be looking at some of the hottest teams in America and how they're doing on the college basketball odds of late.
Virginia Cavaliers (8-0 ATS L/8) - The Cavvies are on their way to the dance this year, and they might be on their way to the Top 25 if they can find a way to beat Pittsburgh on the road on Sunday. UVA has been one of the hottest cover teams in the land after a woeful 3-6 ATS start to the season, and it began by going to Tallahassee and beating down Florida State as a short underdog. Since then, the only SU loss was in a close call at Cameron Indoor Stadium. It's hard to think that this is the same team which was blasted by Tennessee 87-52 in its last game in the calendar year of 2013.
SIU-Edwardsville Cougars (5-0 ATS L/5) - You probably don't know all that much about one of the newest members of Division I basketball, but perhaps you should. The Cougs are only 7-14 SU this year, but they have a legitimate chance to challenge Murray State for the OVC West title this year. SIU-Edwardsville has covered its last five games, including beating those Racers at home a week and a half ago. There are three SU wins as underdogs in this mix, and road losses to Tennessee Chattanooga and Southeast Missouri State only came by a combined five points.
Syracuse Orange (5-0 ATS L/5) - The Cuse might have the best team in the country, and they might be poised to make another run at the Final Four this year. F CJ Fair is averaging over 16 points per game, but the real key to the success for bettors of the 'Cuse is their defense. The team has allowed 59 points or fewer and seven straight games and 54 points or fewer in six of those seven duels. When that 2-3 zone defense kicks in and is locked down, there is no such thing as the perfect offense, short of simply making those difficult shots. ACC teams are having no luck scoring on this team, and the end result is a heck of a lot of covers. Save for maybe a home game against Duke, there really isn't a game on the horizon that makes us think that the Orange are getting beaten any time soon either.
Nebraska Cornhuskers (5-0 ATS L/5) - The Cornhuskers are one of the doormats of the Big Ten, and they are clearly going to have a lot of issues for the rest of this season. But to their credit, they have hung in there and fought their way to five consecutive covers. They actually beat Minnesota and shocked the heck out of Ohio State, and they came ever so close to being the first team in conference to beat Michigan and should have had Penn State in Happy Valley as well. The trend to follow with the Huskers? They're 7-2 ATS at home and just 3-3 ATS on the road this year, though two of those three covers have come in their last two road games.
