Indiana upends No. 22 Ohio State, 72-64

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Kevin ''Yogi'' Ferrell scored 20 points and Will Sheehey added 19 on Sunday, leading Indiana past No. 22 Ohio State 72-64.

It was the second straight win for the Hoosiers (17-12, 7-9 Big Ten) - both over ranked teams in the last four days.

LaQuinton Ross and Lenzelle Smith Jr. had 19 points each for the Buckeyes (22-8, 9-8) who lost their second straight - both road games against teams in the bottom half of the conference race.

And this one came on a day the Hoosiers were without freshman Noah Vonleh, the conference's leading rebounder, because of an injured foot.

But after falling into an early 19-12 deficit, the Hoosiers took control.

They closed the half on a 21-5 run to take a 33-25 lead, fended off two second-half charges from Ohio State and sealed it from the free throw line in the final minute.

It was a strange game for the Buckeyes.

They scored 48 points in the paint and went 14 of 23 from the free throw line, managing only one basket outside the paint - that one coming from 10 feet. And they were a dreadful 0 for 11 from 3-point range.

Things sure didn't start well for the Hoosiers even though the predicted overnight snow and ice storm was not as severe as anticipated.

A smaller than usual crowd showed up for one of Indiana's biggest rivals, and 30 minutes before tip, coach Tom Crean announced on Twitter that Vonleh was out because of inflammation in the foot. He dressed in a gray sweatsuit and wore a boot over his left foot. So when the Buckeyes forced three turnovers in the first 5:03, broke to a 9-2 lead and forced Indiana to take a timeout after making it 19-11 with 8:16 left in the first half, things didn't look good.

But the Hoosiers beat the Buckeyes at their own game.

After a replay review turned Ferrell's 2-point basket into a 3-pointer to make it 19-12 and Smith followed that by making a free throw to give Ohio State a 20-12 lead, the Hoosiers rallied.

Ferrell and Sheehey scored on layups, Jeremy Hollowell, Vonleh's replacement, made two free throws and Troy Williams scored on another layup to tie the score at 20. Following an Ohio State timeout, Sheehey knocked down a 3 to give Indiana the lead. Ferrell finished the 16-0 run with another 3 to make it 28-20.

Ohio State closed to 39-37 with 15:04 to go and got as close as 48-47 with 9:22 left.

But Evan Gordon and Sheehey made consecutive 3s, right in front of the Hoosiers bench, on their next two possessions and the Buckeyes never got another chance to take the lead. Indiana closed it out with six free throws in the last 50 seconds.
