Odds Subject to Change

This game is split, as there is no opening spread with the even -110 moneyline for both schools entering. UCLA is 7-2 SU, but are one game under .500 when playing on the road. Arizona State is 4-3, not playing a game since Dec. 16 against UTEP - in which the Sun Devils lost.

The point total is a somewhat high 150.5, which UCLA is 5-4 on this season. Arizona State is 3-4 with the O/U this season, although it'll be interesting to see how players perform after a near-month hiatus.

Betting Analysis – UCLA Bruins

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 7-2
  • ATS: 6-3
  • SU - Home: 6-0
  • SU - Away: 1-2
  • O/U: 5-4

Mick Cronin has done a tremendous job in under two years at UCLA. The Bruins are beginning to find the form reminiscent of last year's end of season run. Tyger Campbell is beginning to score more points, and not just rely on his seven assists per game 'quarterback' play.

When Campbell is scoring UCLA is tough to stop, as they have Jamie Jaquez and Jules Bernard who also average a double-digit point total. It's going to be interesting to see how UCLA does as the season progresses though, as Chris Smith is out for the season.

Smith averaged 12.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game before getting hurt, which means Cody Riley and Jalen Hill need to step up on the glass. Bernard is a monstrous defender, shown in the last game UCLA played against Colorado.

This is a well-oiled machine in Los Angeles, regardless if Smith is active or not. There are too many productive players in various facets of the game, which isn't surprising as Cronin usually utilizing his entire roster well. The defense of a Mick Cronin team is typically better than what UCLA is doing this season, but UCLA checks a lot of the boxes for a solid sleeper in the March Madness tournament.

There's just one test the Bruins have yet to pass - winning on the road. It's unclear if a road win in Tempe will be considered 'marquee' for the selection committee, but Arizona State can win. However, if UCLA sticks to what makes them good - passing the ball and getting to the charity stripe - they should be fine winning this road game.

Betting Analysis – Arizona State

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 4-3
  • ATS: 1-6
  • SU - Home: 1-3
  • SU - Away: 3-0
  • O/U: 3-4

Arizona State is a 1-3 'at home' (Wells Fargo Arena games) this season, which includes a shocking loss to the UTEP Miners. This Sun Devils team was favored to win the Pac-12 to begin the season, as guard Remy Martin was a top choice to win the Wooden Award. That all faded quickly, especially after the December loss to UTEP.

Can Arizona State, who was already struggling, manage to face a good UCLA team after a month long break? It'll be tough, but the Sun Devils are talented enough to win the conference. Arizona State did play a good Villanova team close, but otherwise have been a disappointment.

Martin needs to step up, along with Alonzo Verge. The senior leaders need to find a way to close big games out better, specifically on defense. The Sun Devils have allowed the 290th-most points per game, with a defensive efficiency raring of 101.7 (256th in the nation).

Arizona State also ranks 321st in total rebounds per game, but they do average four blocks a game which ranks 81st. There isn't much to like about Arizona State, other than the potential, but how many years in a row has that been said now?

Freshmen Josh Christopher and Marcus Bagley have been playing well for young players, but overall this team needs to step up on defense for any real shot at making the March Madness tournament in a few months.

UCLA-Arizona State Predictions

Arizona State has a chance to win this game, especially without Chris Smith playing for the Bruins. The Sun Devils will more than likely score a lot of points at home, so can UCLA keep pace or step up on defense? Arizona State will probably turn the ball over a lot here, but Remy Martin is capable of taking over any game.

Martin vs Campbell will be a fun matchup to watch, but it will be Martin's scoring vs. Campbell's 'quarterbacking' that determines the winner here. UCLA is the better team on paper, although Arizona State is talented enough to beat the Bruins. If you must pick a winner go with UCLA, although the point total market seems to be easier here.

With Arizona State not playing in a month, it's tough to see them touch 80 points here. UCLA also hasn't seen a team score 80 points in seven games this season. The Sun Devils have also gone UNDER the given point total in four straight games.

  • Score Prediction: UCLA 73 Arizona State 71
