The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) began in 1999 and its championship game pits the top two teams in the country according to its computer rankings. Teams from the SEC have won each of the last seven titles, including three by Alabama. Following a 3-6 ATS run by the favorites from 1998 through 2007, the 'chalk' has risen by cashing in five of the last six title games.
Florida State appeared in the first three BCS championships, winning just once (2000) against Virginia Tech at the Louisiana Superdome. The Seminoles failed to cover in the favorite role in losses to Tennessee (1999) and Oklahoma (2001), while combining to score just 18 points in those defeats. The University of Miami dominated Nebraska at the Rose Bowl in 2002 in an easy 23-point triumph, but the Canes were tripped up the following season against Ohio State in double-overtime as 12-point favorites (the highest number a team has laid in BCS championship history).
Favorites have won and cashed in five of the last six title games, including three dominating efforts by Alabama. The Crimson Tide beat all three opponents by double-digits, while cruising past previously unbeaten Notre Dame, 42-14 as 9 ½-point 'chalk' in January 2013. The 2014 BCS championship takes place at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, as favorites own a 2-1 SU/ATS record and the 'over' has hit twice.
