CINCINNATI (AP) - Quarterback Munchie Legaux had more tests on his injured left knee on Monday while Brendon Kay prepared to take over the starting job for Cincinnati.

Legaux hurt the knee during the fourth quarter of a 45-17 loss at Illinois on Saturday. His left leg bending awkwardly on a hit as he tried to pass. He was taken from the game to a hospital in Urbana, Ill., and was transferred to a hospital in Cincinnati on Sunday.

Coach Tommy Tuberville said he was getting an update on Monday to determine the severity of the injury, which has forced the Bearcats to reconfigure the depth chart at quarterback.

``We'll just see what transpires with the week,'' Tuberville said.

Kay will take over at quarterback when the Bearcats (1-1) host Northwestern State on Saturday night. The sixth-year senior was the incumbent before he developed a sore shoulder during camp, limiting his practice and giving Legaux a chance to reclaim the starting job.

Legaux threw for a touchdown and ran for another during a 42-7 opening win over Purdue. Tuberville decided to start him over Kay, who was still limited by the shoulder problem.

Tuberville said on Monday that Kay should be able to do everything necessary to get ready for Saturday's game. The Bearcats have a bye on Sept. 28 that will provide an extra week for him to rest the shoulder.

``Last week was the first time he went the entire week (in practice),'' Tuberville said. ``I'd say going into last week's game he was 95 to 100 percent. Yesterday we had a short practice and he threw with some of our younger quarterbacks. He looked fine and ready to go.

``So it'll be a concern as we go, but our schedule sets up pretty good.''

Kay made it into the opener at Purdue and played the final quarter, although the Bearcats had a big lead and were essentially running out the clock. He took over after Legaux was hurt at Illinois and came through it without a problem.

``He's played 40 plays in first two games, didn't get hit that much, so he's ready to go,'' Tuberville said. ``He's fired up and excited about getting back to the starting position.''

If Kay has problems, the Bearcats are in trouble. The No. 3 quarterback is redshirt freshman Bennie Coney.
