Ohio State rehires former assistant

The departure earlier this month of defensive backs coach Kerry Combs to the Tennessee Titans left a hole in Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer's staff.

On Monday, it appeared that Meyer filled that position with a familiar face to Ohio State. Taver Johnson, who was the cornerback coach from 2007 to 2011, was listed in the Ohio State employee directory as a staff member in the athletics department.

Johnson spent the past season as the defensive coordinator at Temple. Multiple websites had reported he was the leading candidate to replace Coombs, who made the leap to the NFL to join Mike Vrabel's staff with the Tennessee Titans.

In Johnson's only season with the Owls, they finished third in the AAC in total defense (381.5 yards per game).

-- Kansas State lost two veteran offensive skill position players when slot receiver Dominique Heath and running back Dalvin Warmack announced Sunday they will finish their careers elsewhere as graduate transfers.

Heath, who led the team in catches in 2016 with 45 for 438 yards, finished his three seasons with the Wildcats with 95 receptions for 947 yards and seven touchdowns. He caught a career-low 22 passes last season.

Heath, from North Carolina, said on Twitter he would like to transfer somewhere closer to home after his May graduation.

Warmack rushed 101 times for 527 yards in his Kansas State career, used in a scatback role to complement running backs Alex Barnes and Justin Silmon, both of whom return in 2018. Warmack said he is on schedule to graduate in May.

-- Arkansas State and Miami might not be facing off on the field any time soon, but it looks like they could be meeting in court.

The two were supposed to play last year, but Hurricane Irma wiped out the Sept. 9 game in Jonesboro, Ark. Reportedly, the contract signed in 2013 by the schools stipulates that if either school cancels the game, they must pay the other $650,000.

Miami has reportedly offered to reschedule the game sometime between 2024 and 2028, but Arkansas State says those dates won't work and wants the game rescheduled for 2020 or 2021. Miami responded that although they do have open dates during that time, those games must be home games.

Florida was bracing for Irma and decided to cancel the trip to Arkansas so players could prepare for the Category 5 hurricane, which struck south Florida on Sept. 10.

"It is very unfortunate that we have been unable to resolve this matter, and we remain hopeful this can be worked out without the need for litigation. Ultimately that will be up to the University of Miami," Arkansas State general counsel Brad Phelps said in a statement.
