Alabama linebacker VanDarius Cowan has been dismissed from the program for a violation of team rules, the school announced on Monday.
"Each of us has a responsibility to represent The University of Alabama in a first-class way, and failure to meet those standards can't be tolerated," Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban said in a statement. "We wish VanDarius the very best in the future."
Cowan was charged last week with third-degree assault stemming from an alleged incident at a Tuscaloosa bar.
Per the Tuscaloosa News, Cowan was accused of punching a 26-year-old man in the face. The alleged victim, who claimed he did nothing to provoke Cowan, reportedly was treated for seven stitches on his lip and suffered a broken tooth and nerve damage.
Cowan collected two tackles in seven games last season during his freshman year. He was expected to see an uptick in playing time in 2018.
