Clemson played its backups the 2H vs Temple & 4th string RB Demerick Chancellor rushed for 114 yds as CU set a school record by scoring 50 pts for the 4th time in a year although the 4 opp’s that they topped 50 pts against are ranked #99, #108, #114 & #118 in defense in the NCAA. Temple WR Travis Shelton touched the ball for the first time since 2004 & set a school record with 205 yds on returns....

It was a great story on Thurs night as Boston College K Steve Aponavicius, who had never appeared in a football game (college, HS or even grade school), kicked & connected on 2 FG’s & 2 xp’s without a miss. He struggled some on KO’s but Coach O’Brien had to be pleased with his effort after suspending their starting K...

Wake Forest K Sam Swank became just the 5th player in NCAA history to have three 50 yd FG’s in the same game & tied WF’s school record for longest kick with a pair of 53 yarders along with a 51 yd’r. WF delivered an Underdog Play of the Week winner for Power Sweep with their first win in Carter-Finley Stadium since 1984 & started 6-1 for the first time since 1979...

The difference in the Army/Connecticut game was two big plays. UC, pinned at their own 2, got a 98 yd TD run by Caulley, the 2nd longest in school history & then got a 72 yd PR for a TD by Taylor in their 21-7 win where the teams were even in FD’s with 13...

Purdue had a 510-194 yd edge until Northwestern got a 57 yd drive on the final series in a 31-10 PU win...

At the half N Carolina had a 218-216 yd edge but USF would get 35 & 25 yd TD drives after int’s & 3 times UNC had a big play wiped out by either a clip, hold or pers foul & they trailed 20-10 at the half. UNC also had a perfect call of an onside kick trailing 27-13 & the K was all alone to recover the ball but unfortunately it only rolled 9.5 yds, setting USF up for a short 44 yd drive for a TD...

Arizona St’s DC noted that USC QB Booty had been fortunate in some of his throws saying he could have had many more picks than he’s had this year. USC led ASU 21-0 in the 2Q but a Booty fmbl set up an ASU 30 yd TD drive & Booty’s out pattern was jumped by DB Walter-White who raced 43 yds for a TD to tie it. Booty hit just 12 of 25 for 148 yds & USC’s game winning 75 yd, 14 play drive for a TD was almost all on the ground behind runs of RB Washington...

Miami, Fl led Florida Int’l just 7-0 at the half & a TD in the 3Q made it 14-0 when a bench clearing brawl erupted & 8 players from FIU were ejected, 5 from Miami. UM scored the game’s final 21 points, getting the cover, 35-0...

LSU has been dominant at home this year with their closest game a 31 pt win over Miss St. They were catching some heat after their 2nd loss of the season by the local media & took out their frustrations on Kentucky, 49-0. QB Russell hit 15 of 18 for 226 & guiding them to a 35-0 lead before leaving early 3Q...

Idaho is a surprising 3-0 in conf play for the first time since 1999 & is on top of the standings in the WAC along with Boise St...

Washington St entered the Cal game with 27 sacks but only sacked Cal QB Longshore one time. Cal set up TD’s with a blk’d punt & an int in a low scoring 21-3 game...

Colorado was much better than their 0-6 record would indicate & it showed vs Texas Tech. They held TT scoreless thru 3Q’s, the first team to do so since September of ‘99 & TT had just 3 offensive plays in CU territory in the first 3Q’s as the Buffs led 23-0. TT QB Graham Harrell who had consecutive passes int’d & ret’d for TD’s vs Missouri, struggled again having 3 more int’s...

Kent St won their 5th game in a row for the first time since 1976 & are now 4?0 in the MAC for the first time ever. They dominated Toledo holding the Rockets to 234 total yards...

C Michigan also improved to 4-0 in the MAC for the first time since 1990 as they beat Ball St 18-7. Ball St came in with the MAC’s leading pass attack but was held to 160 yds by the Chips D & Dan LeFevour threw for 171 yds & rushed for 75 for CM...

Wyoming beat Utah for the first time since 1999 in a game they led 31-0. They did have a 42 yd IR for a TD & a fmbl set up another short TD but Utah finished with just 8 FD’s & 144 total yards offense...

Duke did not cross the Sems 35 until the final 1:00 of the 1H & then at the end of the game got a 41 yd TD pass with :07 left trailing 51-17...UNLV trailed New Mexico 14-0 when Shane Steichen replaced Rocky Hinds at QB. He threw for 295 yds & 5 TD’s & led them to 28 unanswered points in the 2Q. UNLV led most of the 2H but lost in OT by a FG...

Colt McCoy set a Texas record with 6 TD passes breaking the mark of 5 set by James Brown (1994) & Chris Simms (2001). Texas actually trailed 10-0 after 1Q but outscored the Bears 63-14 until they allowed a TD with :03 left...

Kansas St RB Leon Patton, who had over 300 all-purp yds the week prior, was held to 13 yds on 12 carries by the Nebraska D. The Huskers got their first win in Manhattan since 1996 in a convincing 21-3 final...

Texas A&M had the ball for 41:30 vs Missouri. The key play of the game happened early when A&M knocked the ball out of the receiver’s hands as he was headed for the EZ & it was ruled a TB. A&M broke a string of 4 straight losses to ranked teams.

SPREAD PLAYS & SU WINS OF THE WEEK - UAB was -4’ or 5 & led Rice by 5. They appeared to clinch the win when Kris Guyton int’d a pass with :23 remaining in the game. Guyton lumbered down the field but fmbl’d & Rice rec’d at the 19 with :18 left. After Clement ran for 9 yds on FD, he threw a TD pass with :03 left to allow Rice to escape with a SU & ATS win, 34-33...

The Total in the Fla/Aub game was 38’. Watching, it clearly appeared to be headed Under the Total. AU got a 39 yd FG with :32 left for a 4 point lead apparently clinching the game but was still 1/2 point under the Total. On 4th & 10, on the last play of the game, UF threw a short pass & then tried the Cal play starting to lateral the ball. The ball was fmbl’d, however, & Auburn’s Lee, picked it up & ran it 25 yds into the EZ with no time left on the clock putting the game Over!...

While it had nothing to do with the spread, Arkansas St had the cover firmly in hand & a 27-19 FD edge vs Memphis. They still trailed 23-20 with :06 left & were at their own 40 yd line when a Hail Mary prayer was answered with a 53 yd TD pass from Leonard to Higgins. Ironically, in college football they are supposed to kick the xp, even after a final TD but in neither the Ark St/Memphis or Fla/Aub games did they attempt to do so as the crowds had rushed the field.

MISLEADING FINALS, FRONTDOOR & BACKDOOR COVERS -

Syracuse only trailed 17-14 at the half having 80 & 60 yd drives vs W Virg in the 1H but the Mountaineers scored on their first 4 poss of the 2H to lead 41-14 with 9:24 left. WV brought in backup QB Brown & there was a collision in the backfield with 5:08 left & they fumbled & SU rec’d at the 11. The Orange got a 34 yd FG with 2:38 left for the backdoor cover & even recovered another fmbl with 2:11 left but fmbl’d it back :11 later...

W Michigan appeared to have a tight game vs N Illinois & had to recover an onside kick to win by 2. At the half, however, WM had a 260-6 yd edge & Garrett Wolfe, who came in avg’ing 224 ypg rushing, was held to 25 yds on 18 carries ending his Heisman hopes. WM kept settling for short FG’s & even missed a 22 yd’r & NI also blk’d a punt for a TD keeping them in the game...

In the 1H, Maryland was int’d at the 13 & missed a 29 yd FG & they trailed 20-0. The Terps got a 2 yd drive for a TD in the 3Q after a fmbl’d punt & after a 16 yd punt, drove 31 yds for another TD. They got a 56 yd TD run by Lattimore & then the Terps got a 45 yd IR for the apparent frontdoor cover, 28-20 with 8:00 left. UVA was SOD at the Terp 15 but got a 44 yd TD pass with 2:37 left (2 pt failed) giving them the backdoor cover...

SMU QB Justin Willis who was susp’d last week, came off the bench in the 2Q vs Marshall & hit 20 of 23 for 208 yds in an impressive performance. Devin Lowery tied a school record with 3 int’s. SMU trailed 21-17 in the 4Q but Wills hit his 3rd TD pass with 6:38 left. Then after another Lowery int, Willis got a 17 yd TD pass 1:06 later to get SMU ahead of the spread for the frontdoor cover with 5:44 left. SMU did have a 366-299 yd edge.

INJURIES OF NOTE -

The Spartans were already without top rusher Javon Ringer who is out for the year & WR Matt Trannon (out/gm). Drew Stanton inj’d his back in the 1H & then hit his head on a Gatorade container after a hard hit by LB Freeman in the 3Q & would not return. The Buckeyes led 38-0 before Mich St drove 69 yds in 12 plays for a garbage TD with 1:08 left behind backup QB Hoyer...

Brian Brohm was supposed to be out 4-6 weeks but returned to the lineup & hit 20 of 37 for 324 yds but was plagued by dropped passes with 6 in the 1H. Louisville did have 429 yds offense & led 23-10 with just 6:09 left but the Bearcats who had 198 yds offense at that point, would gain 143 yds on their final 2 drives getting a TD with 4:10 left & taking over at their 8 with 2:45 left. They got to the UL 16 but a 4th down pass was knocked down in the EZ & UL escaped...

Adrian Peterson had a great game vs Iowa St with 183 yds rushing & his 53 yd TD run with 6:35 left clinched the spread win 34-9. As he dove into the EZ, however, he broke his collarbone & will likely miss the rest of the regular season...

Arizona was already without starting QB Willie Tuitama. Backup Adam Austin led them to a 17-0 lead vs Stanford but then he was injured & Kris Heavner, who was the starting QB for a year & a half & transferred out & back, QB’d the 2H, mostly handing off. Heavner did hit 4 of 4 passes but for just 11 yds. Stanford QB Trent Edwards inj’d his foot after 1 series & TC Ostrander was very ineffective as Stanford had just 4 FD’s the entire game & their only TD came on a 72 yd IR TD by track man Wopamo Osaisai...

Penn St lost starting QB Anthony Morelli in the 3Q after a helmet-to-helmet hit. Backup QB Daryll Clark was also inj’d limping off after a scramble. Third string QB Paul Cianciolo finished the game & hit 3 of 7 for 51 yds...

A key to Rutgers romp over Navy was the fact that Navy QB Brian Hampton dislocated his left knee in the 1Q & may be lost for the season. It was scoreless when Hampton went out but Navy’s offense struggled without him & totalled just 9 FD’s & 161 yds. Rutgers only led 3-0 midway thru the 2Q but a pair of blk’d punts led to a TD & a FG in the 3Q & they totalled just 14 FD’s in their 34-0 win...

Isaiah Stanback, Washington’s top-notch QB, injured his right ankle after a 19 yd run in the 4Q. UW led the game 17-10 at the half but in the 2H punted 5 times & turned the ball over twice on downs & were outgained 300-77 in Oregon St’s upset win...

UCLA was without QB Ben Olson. Patrick Cowan started & hit 16 of 31 for 112 yds in an extremely tough venue of Autzen Stadium. Oregon appeared on their way to a rout leading 20-3 after 1Q but QB Dixon got banged up & left the game on a few occasions. Brady Leaf was just 1 of 5 for 4 yds in his place but the Ducks still managed to cover, 30-20 with UCLA getting a TD in the final 2:00 after a fmbl’d punt to make the final score appear close.

TOP 25 TEAMS GO DOWN -

Indiana knocked off its highest ranked opponent in nearly 20 years when they upset #15 Iowa. James Hardy, who missed 2 earlier games, caught 8 passes for 104 yds & 3 TD's including a 20 yarder in the 4Q for the game winning score. Indy was outgained 467-413...

The spattering of Vanderbilt fans among the 92,000 in Sanford Stadium cheered wildly as VU got their first win over Georgia since 1994 & they are 4-39 SU the last 43. The last time UGA lost to an unranked team at home was in 2002. UGA led 13-7 at the half. VU led 21-13 after 3Q’s, the Bulldogs got a 24 yd IR for a TD early 4Q & the lead but VU got a 33 yd FG with :02 left for the stunning upset. UGA had 373 yds but failed to score a TD on 4 trips inside the VU 20 settling for 3 short FG’s.

RECEIVERS OF NOTE -

QB Bobby Reid set a school record with 457 all-purp yds vs Kansas but the star of the game was Adarius Bowman who had 13 rec’s for an amazing school record 300 yds & 4 TD’s. Last year’s leading receiver, D'Juan Woods, who had 3 times as many rec’s as the #2 man, had 3 catches in this game for 42 yds. Reid also had 5 TD passes.

TURNOVERS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE -

Illinois had 21-11 FD & 397-238 yd edges but were done in by a 5-1 TO deficit & a pair of punts by OU P Lasher that pinned them inside the 5 twice in the 4Q. OU got the win on a 32 yd FG with :05 left after IL lost their 4th fmbl on their own 16 with just over 1:00 left.

POINTS LEFT OFF THE BOARD - In the 1H of the Colorado St/Air Force game, CSU had a 316?232 yd edge which is some team's totals for an entire game yet the two combined for just 24 pts. CSU had a 3rd & 1 at the 13 but 2 straight false start penalties forced a 3rd & 11, they then dropped a TD pass & missed a 41 yd FG. In the 1H AF would fumble at the 29 & then K Sasser missed his first FG of the year. They settled for a 23 yd FG after a 1st & goal & also fmbl’d the ball at the CSU 2. Trailing 21-3, AF dominated the 2H with 3 TD drives & CSU’s final poss’s ended on a punt (7:47) & they were int’d at the AF 17 with 1:59 to go.
