T here's a new No. 1 atop the Rivals.com recruiting rankings. That would be the Florida Gators, who have non-binding oral committments from four 5-star players.
UF jumped Alabama and Notre Dame with this week's committment from defensive tackle Omar Hunter out of Buford, GA. Hunter originally was a part of the Irish's class, but he changed his mind about Notre Dame several weeks ago and chose Florida over Georgia.
Another 5-star commit for the Gators is WR Carl Moore, who Rivals ranked as the top junior-college player in the nation. However, the NCAA is investigating the possibility of a secondary violation by Urban Meyer in the recruitment of Moore, who is already enrolled at UF.
The inquiry revolves around contact with Moore and his girlfriend, gymnast Maranda Smith, who was previously enrolled at UCLA in 2006. Smith is now at Florida and recently told the Gainesville Sun, "I used to talk to [Meyer] every day back in November when he was recruiting Carl. He kept asking how Carl was doing, and [he] wanted me to come here and do gymnastics."
Per NCAA rules, coaches can only contact recruits once a week in November. It is unclear whether or not Smith was exaggerating Meyer's contact with Moore, but according to today's edition of the Orlando Sentinel, UF and the SEC are exploring phone records to review the case.
NCAA rules also limit college coaches to recruiting only their sport, so contact by Meyer with Smith could be a secondary violation.
Meyer seemed unfazed in an interview with the Sentinel last week. "No problems with that," he said. "We're fine."
There are still a number of big-time recruits that have yet to make a decision. Terrelle Pryor, who Rivals ranks as the No. 1 prep football player and the 27th best basketball player, is expected to announce on National Signing Day.
Michigan and Ohio State are thought to be the front-runners for Pryor's services. LSU, Oregon, Florida and Penn St. are also in the hunt.
Julio Jones is the nation's No. 4 rated player according to Rivals. Jones, a WR out of Foley, AL., has narrowed his schools to Alabama, FSU, Florida, Texas Tech and Oklahoma. The guess here is that Jones will join Nick Saban's second class at 'Bama.
Darrell Scott is the nation's top running back from out of Ventura, CA. Texas appears to have the lead for Scott's services ahead of Colorado.
Rivals has its top 10 classes ranked in this order: 1-Florida 2-Notre Dame 3-Alabama 4-Georgia 5-FSU 6-Ohio St. 7-Oklahoma 8-Miami 9-UCLA 10-Texas
