Affidavits link Pruett to violations
August 19, 2008
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -Sworn affidavits in a federal lawsuit implicate former Marshall football coach Bob Pruett in an academic scandal and a jobs program for athletes that drew NCAA violations.
The NCAA sanctioned Marshall in 2001 but did not name Pruett. Marshall was placed on four years' probation and lost football and basketball scholarships for violating NCAA rules.
The affidavits are part of a 5-year-old federal lawsuit filed by David Ridpath, Marshall's former NCAA compliance officer.
Ridpath was fired in 2003. His lawsuit accuses Marshall, Pruett and others of using him as a scapegoat.
The affidavits were first reported by CBSSportsline.com.
Pruett's attorney, Edward Kowal, says Pruett looks forward to addressing the issues at trial.
Pruett is now an assistant coach at Virginia.
