-Evan Royster rushed for 141 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 19 Penn State to a 45-14 victory over Oregon State.

-In his second start for Wisconsin, Allan Evridge completed 17 of 26 for 308 yards and a touchdown. Evridge, a transfer from Kansas State, threw only 10 passes in the Badgers' opening victory over Akron.

-UConn tailback Donald Brown rushed for 214 yards, including a seven-yard touchdown that gave the Huskies a 12-9 overtime victory over Temple.

-Illinois quarterback Juice Williams ran for 174 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 24 Illinois to a 47-21 victory over Eastern Illinois. Williams broke the school quarterback rushing record of 145 yards, which he set in 2006. He also threw for 124 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted twice and fumbled a yard short of a touchdown.

-Clemson tailback C.J. Spiller carried only six times on Saturday. But he scored three touchdowns on runs of 1, 17 and 37 yards as the Tigers routed The Citadel 45-17.

With back-to-back victories over ranked teams, the East Carolina Pirates are starting to build a case to become the first Conference USA member to earn a Bowl Championship Series berth.

East Carolina followed up last week's win over then-No. 17 Virginia Tech with a commanding 24-3 victory over eighth-ranked West Virginia, which won a BCS bowl in January. Quarterback Patrick Pinkney completed 22 of 28 passes for 236 yards and a touchdown as the Pirates beat a top 10 team for the first time since 1999, when they upset then-No. 9 Miami.

Arkansas State, a week after upsetting Texas A&M, had the second-best scoring performance in school history in an 83-10 victory over Texas Southern. It was the Red Wolves' high scoring game since 1987, when they scored 77 against East Texas State. The program record is 101 set in 1917 against Central Arkansas. Arkansas State is the first major college team to score at least 80 in a game since Texas Tech scored exactly that many against Sam Houston State in 2005.

No. 15 Brigham Young hopes to become the latest outsider to crash the Bowl Championship Series party. But the Cougars didn't look BCS-worthy in a 28-27 victory over Washington, extending the nation's longest win streak to 12 games.

The Cougars needed to block a 35-yard extra point with 2 seconds remaining to hold off the Huskies, who have lost 11 of their last 13 games. The ball was spotted at BYU's 18-yard line after Huskies quarterback Jake Locker drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for throwing the football into the air to celebrate the potential tying touchdown run.

It was a brutal ending for Locker, who accounted for 270 of Washington's 337 total yards.

Tim Tebow threw two touchdown passes, helping No. 5 Florida snap a six-game losing streak against Miami with a 26-3 victory at The Swamp. It was Florida's first win since 1985 in the on-again, off-again series.

First-year Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson won his Atlantic Coast Conference debut, leading the Yellow Jackets to a 19-16 victory at Boston College, which won the ACC's Atlantic Division last season. Next up for Johnson and the Jackets: a trip to Virginia Tech, the defending Coastal Division champions.

Both Ohio State and Michigan struggled to put away Mid-American Conference opponents. Playing without injured tailback Beanie Wells, the third-ranked Buckeyes trailed Ohio 14-6 in the third quarter before rallying for a 26-14 victory in Columbus - a result that hardly inspires confidence as Ohio State prepares for next week's visit to No. 1 Southern California.

The Wolverines scored a late touchdown to put away Miami (Ohio) 16-6 in front of 106,724, the smallest crowd since Michigan Stadium was expanded in 1998. It was coach Rich Rodriguez's first victory for Michigan.

Ninth-ranked Auburn (2-0) had not allowed a point for the first 102 minutes of the season before Southern Mississippi scored a touchdown late in the third quarter. The Tigers hung on for a 27-13 victory, limiting the Golden Eagles to 37 rushing yards and allowing only 3-of-15 third-down conversions.

Sam Swank hit a 41-yard field goal with 3 seconds remaining to lift No. 20 Wake Forest to a 30-28 victory over Ole Miss in Winston-Salem. The Demon Deacons went 57 yards in 45 seconds after surrendering a go-ahead touchdown. ... Armando Cuko kicked a 42-yarder as time expired to lead Massachusetts to a 45-42 victory over Holy Cross, which called back-to-back timeouts to try to freeze the kicker.

``That was pathetic. It was a pathetic performance. OU should've won the game. I don't know how we came out with it.'' - Ohio State wide receiver Brian Hartline after the Buckeyes rallied for a 26-14 win over Ohio, a 33 1/2-point underdog.

``In the second half, when things started going bad, I think there's some guys (who) quit. ... I'm ashamed. I apologize to the United States Military, Corps of Cadets, anybody really who watched that game. That's not the way that these kids need to play this game.'' - New Army coach Stan Brock after a 28-10 loss to New Hampshire.
