CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) - Cody Stone passed for 178 yards and two touchdown passes to Tyson Poots for Southern Utah's first win in 20 games, a 38-10 victory over Adams State on Saturday.
Poots had seven receptions for 143 yards for the Thunderbirds (1-1), which had lost 19 straight dating back to September 2006. Southern Utah lost to Air Force 41-7 after going winless last season.
Adams State (0-2) outgained Southern Utah 310-229 but trailed 35-0 at the half.
Southern Utah scored on its first possession, getting a 7-yard touchdown run from Jared Ursua less than four minutes into the game.
Stone sandwiched scoring passes of 10 and 13 yards to Poots between two special teams touchdowns.
Thatcher Taylor blocked an Adams State punt and returned it 29 yards to put Southern Utah ahead 14-0 with 4:15 left in the first quarter.
After Poots second touchdown gave the Thunderbirds a 28-0 lead, Nick Miller returned a punt 57 yards to make it 35-0 with 5:35 to go in the half.
Oscar Murray scored Adams State's only touchdown on a 38-yard pass with 3:35 left in the third quarter.
The Grizzlies had made it to the Southern Utah 5-yard line before four straight penalties pushed them back to second-and-goal from the 38.
Bryce Buderus screen pass found Murray open in the middle. Murray broke toward the sideline and outran the Southern Utah defense to the end zone, making it 35-7.
The Thunderbirds Steve Pulver hit a 44-yard field goal at the end of the third quarter, and Adams State's Dustin Bolt answered with a 52-yard field goal early in the fourth, to complete the scoring.
Southern Utah's previous victory was a 30-21 home win over Texas State on Sept. 23, 2006.
