News and Notes - Week 15

Navy once again defeated Army, their 13th straight win over a Service Academy. It was Navy's first shutout in the series since their 28-0 win in 1978. As you would expect, in a 34-0 game, Navy dominated with a 430-154 yd edge. One positive note for Army was that they took a time-out with :11 left and Mooney gained 1 yard on the game's final play to set Army's single season record for rushing yards...

Virginia Tech led Boston College 14-0 but broke it open with the help of a couple of TO's. They led 17-7 when they got a 36 yd IR to the BC10 and got a TD on the next play. Then they got a 17 yd FR TD with 9:05 left to make it 30-10. BC's final 3 drives were SOD at the VT46, int'd at the VT5 and SOD at the VT33...

It was a record breaking season for the Washington Huskies, but not the type of records they wanted to set. They had their first winless season in school history and finished the season as the nation's only winless school and the first 0-12 team in Pac-10 history. They are the first Pac-10 team to go winless since 1980 (Oregon St) and the only 8th team in IA history to lose 12 games. USC's OC Steve Sarkisian was announced as the new coach after Ty Willingham won just 11 games in four season. Cal's Jahvid Best rushed for a school record 311 yds and finished as the Pac-10's leading rusher despite playing just a little over 2Q's and Cal had a 325-57 yd edge at the half in their dominating rout...

USC had 33-7 FD and 478-157 yd edges. UCLA led 7-0 after rec'ing a fmbl at the 20 and getting a TD on 3rd & 11 and kept the game close throughout. One of USC's TD's came after a roughing the P pen on a 4th & 17 punt. Another personal foul kept alive a TD drive in the 1Q. The Trojans did miss 3 FG's after missing only 1 all year. USC will be in the Rose Bowl for the 4th year in a row and is appearing in an unprecedented 7th consecutive BCS bowl. UCLA lost 8 games for the first time since 1963 when they finished 2-8. Both teams wore their home jerseys with USC losing a time-out due to that choice and UCLA's Neuheisel taking a time-out immediately after USC was penalized...

Troy wrapped up the SBC Title with a 35-9 win after leading 21-0 at the half. Troy led 35-2 before allowing a 72/9pl drive for a TD with 3:00 left but Ark St did miss 29 & 51 yd FG's in the 1H, fmbl'd on 1st & gl at the Troy 1 and was SOD on 4th & gl at the 3. After a safety, Troy got a pair of TD's on 55 and 21 yd drives after int's on the next 2 poss...

Arizona St needed a win to get to a bowl and actually led 10-7 at the half but 2 key plays completely turned the game around. UA got a 47 yd IR to the ASU34 setting up a TD 4pl later and then a 52 yd PR TD four plays after that and led 28-10 after 3Q's. UA did finish with 389-162 yd and 25-12 FD edges...

FIU did have a 23-11 FD edge vs WKU and a 435-180 yd edge but trailed 3-0 for most of the 1H. FIU got a TD with 2:17 left in the half and that gave them momentum. They took their first 3 drives of the 2H 44/9, 43/9pl and 53/12pl but settled for two FG's and missed one and led 13-3 after 3Q's. WKU went 3 & out on each of their first 3 poss of the 2H. FIU went 56/8pl for a TD with 10:33 left to lead 20-3 and then got a 78 yd IR TD to cap the scoring...

USF had some blown opportunities vs W Virginia. At the end of a 64/14pl drive, USF fmbl'd at the WV5. They had a FD at the WV15 in a 7-7 game with :39 left in the half and was not only int'd in the EZ but WV went 52 yds in the final seconds for a 45 yd FG to lead 10-7. USF did have a 228-135 yd edge at half. After an int, WV got a 42 yd FG early 3Q, 13-7. WV did fmbl at the USF36 (13:56 4Q) and after an 11 play drive missed a game-clinching 48 yd FG with 5:36 left. USF went 52/14pl to the WV16 but on 4th & 12 a pass to the EZ was ruled incomplete and a possible pass interference was not called. WV sent Pat White out in his FHG with the team wearing white road jerseys and pants and most of those in attendance dressed in white...

Oklahoma was trying to become the first team to top 60+ points in five straight games since Tulsa did it back in 1919. Missouri played the game even early missing a 48 yd FG and they trailed just 10-7 with 13:09 left in the half but the Sooners went on 53, 49 (after fmbl), 89 and 28 (after int) yard drives for TD's to lead 38-7 at the half. The 60 point streak appeared in doubt when it was just 48-21 with 11:07 left but OU got a TD with 7:26 left and a key int set up a 37 yd TD run by Madu with 3:33 left giving them 62 for the game. OU did have a 627-354 yard edge...

Cincinnati was in a letdown spot one week after wrapping up the Big East and an Orange Bowl berth and it showed. While they led 10-3 at the half, UH took command in the 3Q with a 60 yd pass setting up a 1 yd TD run. UC then fmbl'd the KO setting up a UH TD and after an int, UH drove 28/6pl for a TD and led 24-10 with 12:36 left. UC needed a 20 yd IR TD with 10:27 left, a 44 yd FG (after 20 yd PR) on a zero yd drive, and then a safety with 4:56 left to pull within 24-22. On the first play after the free kick, UC got a 69 yd TD pass for the lead and then UH punted with 3:44 left. UC got a FD on a 3rd & 10 incomplete pass thanks to a pass interference penalty and took a knee.

Ball St came in 12-0 and spent a good portion of the week trying to figure out which bowl they would go including a matchup of possible undefeated teams with Boise St. Buffalo ruined those plans thanks to 5 BSU TO's including a pair of 14 pt swings as UB got 92 & 74 yd FR TD's within a 4:00 span late 3Q. It was UB's first ever win vs a ranked team as they had been 0-8 vs ranked teams coming in avg just 8.7 ppg. The game was playing in front of 12,871 at Ford Field. Ball St hadn't trailed by more than a TD all season and had been behind for just 23:00 during the year but the 92 yd FR TD put UB ahead for good. UB also had TD's on a 25 yd drive after a fmbl recovery and a 29 yd drive after Ball St was SOD on 4th & 1 with 8:54 left. They added another 25 yd drive for a TD with 2:53 left after rec'ing an onside kick so their only 'real' TD drive (out of 6 TD's scored) was the opening one of the 3Q which went 80/7pl...

At the half Pitt had just 36 yds while Connecticut had 38. The game was tied 3-3 as Pitt blk'd a punt setting up a 21 yd FG. In the 2H Pitt ret'd an int to the UC6 and settled for another 21 yd FG to lead 13-3. After a pair of long TD's, it was 20-10. UC was then int'd, got an 18 yd punt which set Pitt up for 28/1pl TD and went to backup QB Frazer who had 3 drives and 3 int including a 20 yd IR TD which put Pitt ahead 34-10. Late in the gm, UC was SOD on 4th & 10 at the Pitt9 and UC actually finished with a 16-9 FD edge despite being blown out by 24...

Tulsa's David Johnson had a chance to set an NCAA record for pass efficiency for the season and naturally came in #1 in the NCAA in pass eff. Johnson had a miserable game vs E Carolina. Tulsa had 28-14 FD and 399-278 yd edges but a 7-1 TO deficit. Johnson threw 5 int and also fmbl'd after a sack. The TO's set up almost all of EC's scores and the Pirates pulled the upset in the CUSA Title game thanks to those TO's.

Louisville was playing without a couple of starting DB's and it had a profound effect on their game vs Rutgers. Mike Teel tied a Big East record with 7 TD passes and threw for a school record 447 yds. RU had 7 TD's in the 1H and UL had 2 blown opportunities early which turned the game into an avalanche. The Cards took their opening drive 70/11pl but as 6'8" Chichester dove for the TD, he fmbl'd. Two poss later UL dropped a 3rd & 9 FD pass and missed a 33 yd FG. RU rolled to a 49-0 halftime lead and became the 2nd team in NCAA history to start 1-5 but reach a bowl game.

It was a great SEC Championship game between Alabama and Florida. UF led 17-10 at the half but Bama went on 15 and 10 play drives to open the 3Q, first for a TD and then for a FG and UF missed a 42 yd FG. The Tide led 20-17 after 3Q's and had yardage and TOP edges but the Gators went 62/11pl, forced a 3 & out and then went 65/8pl for TD's to lead 31-20 (2:50). UF got an IR to the Tide 19 with 1:39 left and after a pers foul penalty set them back, they finished the game at the Tide 20 taking a knee.
