A few college football betting notes for you to peruse form the good folks at the Bodog Sportsbook:
There are just six teams that we’re posting BCS National Championship odds on currently: Texas (6/5) and Florida (5/4) are the current faves, followed up by Alabama (2/1), TCU (10/1), Boise State (30/1) and Cincinnati (35/1). All of those squads are unbeaten, which will no doubt give us some great postseason debates should more than two stay that way after the league play.
Florida is getting the heaviest action with us, even though the Gators will likely need to beat two tough teams to win a title: Alabama for the SEC crown and then whoever they play in the national title, most likely Texas.
The Longhorns are also getting a lot of love from the public, as many believe their road to the championship is much smoother than Florida’s route.
One conference that won’t be mentioned for the BCS championship is the Pac-10. Oregon had an outside shot before getting beat up by the Cardinal just two weeks ago. Stanford also eliminated any chance of the Trojans getting any consideration after throttling them last Saturday.
Those were just two of the big upsets this year in the Pac-10, which is normally a good conference to play considering the top teams can’t stay upright for long.
As always, USC was supposed to be the team to beat when the season started. That was true until Washington beat the Men of Troy as a 21-point underdog. California was the next in line to claim the throne, but got destroyed by the Ducks by 39 points.
What’s scary is the only constant this year in the Pac-10 has been the Cougars…constantly terrible, that is.
I suppose it’s always a big deal when the Buckeyes and Wolverines meet up, but this Saturday’s showdown is missing a lot of the verve that we’ve come to expect. Ohio State has already punched its ticket to Pasadena after beating the Hawkeyes last week, so not much is to be gained in a win except bragging rights. This contest means a lot more for the Wolverines, who will be playing as double-digit home pups to their biggest rival and looking to become bowl eligible in the process.
If you ask Ohio State coach Jim Tressel, the Buckeyes will not be taking it easy on their trip to the Ann Arbor. The rivalry means that much, even if it has lost its luster over the past few years.
“It’s exciting for a lot of reasons. One, is it’s Ohio State-Michigan and there’s nothing like it,” Tressel said . “Two, it’s your last regular season game and you’d like to think that you’re going to be playing your best football in all phases, offensively, defensively, special teams, and we’ve certainly got a lot of work to do for that to be the case, but we’re looking forward to a great week of preparation. Our kids are excited.”
Take those words for what they’re worth, if anything.
