Notre Dame guard to have surgery Friday

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ Chris Thomas, Notre Dame's leading scorer last
season, will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Friday. ``He played and practiced all year long with persistent pain and swelling,''
coach Mike Brey said Thursday. ``What is most remarkable is that Chris didn't
miss a game and was able to lead us in scoring most nights.''
Thomas, Indiana's high school Mr. Basketball in 2001, led the Irish in
scoring in 22 of 32 games and averaged 19.7 points and 4.7 assists this season.
With one year of eligibility remaining, he already is Notre Dame's career
leader with 638 assists and is eighth in scoring with 1,783 points.
``We knew all year that this was going to be something that would occur at
the end of the season,'' Brey said of the operation, which will be performed at
a South Bend surgery center. ``I'm relieved for Chris that he is finally able
to have the surgery so he can once again play and practice without the daily
