Daily Diamonds - Sunday
August 3, 2014
By Daniel Dobish
It's an exciting time at VegasInsider.com, as Daily Fantasy Sports arrives. VI will provide daily games for pro baseball, including salary cap games, pick 'em games, bracket style games and live drafts. You can also try you hand at the Rapid Fire and Rapid Fire MAX contests. I have been a huge fan of these games, particularly the salary cap style games and Rapid Fire. Once you play a few games, you'll be hooked. Check back on this space each day for advice to help you cash big.
Sunday, August 3, 2014 - TV schedule
1:40 p.m. - L.A. Angels at Tampa Bay (TBS)
8:07 p.m. - N.Y. Yankees at Boston (ESPN)
-- Each day we'll provide a look at MLB cities with outdoor venues which have a 30 percent or more chance of precipitation. It's rather risky to insert guys into your Daily Fantasy lineup in games with a good chance of delay or postponement.
1:05 p.m. - Texas at Cleveland (30 percent chance of isolated t-storms)
1:35 p.m. - Seattle at Baltimore (30 percent chance of isolated t-storms)
1:35 p.m. - Philadelphia at Washington (40 percent chance of scattered t-storms)
2:10 p.m. - Minnesota at Chicago White Sox (40 percent chance of scattered t-storms)
4:10 p.m. - Atlanta at San Diego (30 percent chance of isolated t-storms)
BIG-TICKET ITEM (Salaries $10,000 and Above)
Yu Darvish, SP, Texas ($21100 at CLE): Darvish takes the ball for Sunday's afternoon series finale looking to help his team avoid a sweep. Darvish is 5-0 with a 1.24 ERA in five day starts with 43 strikeouts and a .212 batting average in 36 1/3 innings this season. In his MLB career, he is 12-4 with a 2.80 ERA in day games. And he picked up a win against the Indians back on June 6 against the Indians, allowing four runs and nine hits with eight strikeouts over seven innings. He is well worth the money in this day game.
Aaron Harang, SP, Atlanta ($14600 at SD): Since the start of the 2011 season, Harang has been a mediocre pitcher with an ERA hovering around 4. However, if he could only see his hometown team, the San Diego Padres, a little more frequently he would be in good shape. Harang is 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA in seven starts against the Padres with a complete game, 41 strikeouts and a .207 opponent batting average in 44 innings. He'll be working in San Diego, and will likely have plenty of friends and family to spur him on.
MID-LEVEL VALUES (Salaries between $7,500 and $9,999)
If you spend big up top, you’re going to need some fillers to bring down your average per player salary. Check out these steals from the bargain bin:
Josh Harrison, 3B-OF, Pittsburgh ($9100 at ARI): Harrison remains scalding hot at the plate, and his Daily Fantasy salary is starting to creep up. In fact, his salary jumped almost five percent overnight thanks to his three-hit performance Saturday. Keep pressing Harrison, as he is one of the hottest hitters in the majors. He swatted his 10th homer Saturday and he tapped the plate three times while reaching base four times. Again, he is giving elite-type production at a mid-level price.
Ben Zobrist, 2B-OF, Tampa Bay ($9500 vs LAA): Like Harrison (above), Zobi is another multiple eligibility guy that Daily Fantasy owners love. And he has been on fire lately, hitting .381 (8-for-21) with two doubles, two homers, three RBI and five runs scored over the past seven days. And he has hit Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver fairly well over the years, going 6-for-18 (.333) with two doubles, a triple, a homer, four RBI and a 1.091 OPS.
THE BARGAIN BIN (Salaries less than $7,500)
Jordan Pacheco, C-1B, Arizona ($6850 vs PIT): Pacheco should see regular at-bats at first base with 1B Paul Goldschmidt (hand) on the 15-day disabled list. He has some extra-base hit potential at a low, low price.
Jhonny Peralta, SS, Detroit ($7500 vs MIL): Peralta has been on an extended warm streak, going 21-for-67 (.313) with three doubles, two homers and six RBI over the past 19 games dating back to June 7, raising his average from .239 to .252. If you're looking for a low-priced Daily Fantasy option at a position that lacks depth, Peralta is a good choice.
