Daily Dish - Tuesday
August 12, 2014
By Daniel Dobish
It's an exciting time at VegasInsider.com, as Daily Fantasy Sports arrives. VI will provide daily games for pro baseball, including salary cap games, pick 'em games, bracket style games and live drafts. You can also try you hand at the Rapid Fire and Rapid Fire MAX contests. I have been a huge fan of these games, particularly the salary cap style games and Rapid Fire. Once you play a few games, you'll be hooked. Check back on this space each day for advice to help you cash big.
The weather looked like it might be a problem Monday, but it turned out to be OK. However, Tuesday's weather in the megalopolis and upper midwest appears to be an issue once again. Thankfully, there are 15 total games, with three under the protection of a retractable roof, and six other cities with a 0 percent chance of precipitation in the forecast.
Tuesday, August 12, 2014 - TV schedule
7:05 p.m. - Detroit at Pittsburgh (MLB Network)
7:10 p.m. - L.A. Dodgers at Atlanta (MLB Network)
-- Each day we'll provide a look at MLB cities with outdoor venues which have a 30 percent or more chance of precipitation. It's rather risky to insert guys into your Daily Fantasy lineup in games with a good chance of delay or postponement.
7:05 p.m. - N.Y. Yankees at Baltimore (75 percent chance of thunderstorms)
7:05 p.m. - Arizona at Cleveland (70 percent chance of thunderstorms)
7:05 p.m. - Detroit at Pittsburgh (70 percent chance of thunderstorms)
7:10 p.m. - Boston at Cincinnati (30 percent chance of showers - arriving midway thru game)
7:10 p.m. - Washington at N.Y. Mets (50 percent chance of showers)
BIG-TICKET ITEM (Salaries $10,000 and Above)
Michael Brantley, OF, Cleveland ($10100 vs ARI): Dr. Smooth heads into this game as a must-start Daily Fantasy option against Arizona Diamondbacks RHP Josh Collmenter. He is hitting .353 with 25 doubles, a triple, 13 homers, 58 RBI and a .966 OPS against right-handed pitching. Mickey's boy is hitting .410 (16-for-39) with four doubles, two homers, 10 RBI and a 1.109 OPS in the month of August. As such, he is a great offensive option to build around. Remember, though, weather is a concern in this game, so check the radar and Twitter before finalizing your lineup.
Jon Lester, SP, Oakland ($20850 at KC): Lester hits the road for Kansas City looking to maintain his dominance against the Royals, who have won eight in a row to seize the lead in the American League Central Division. However, the Royals are due for a loss, and Lester is 2-0 with a 1.84 ERA in two starts against them this season, and he is 4-2 with a 2.00 ERA in seven starts agianst the Royals since the start of the 2011 season.
C.J. Wilson, SP, L.A. Angels ($12600 vs PHI): Wilson takes the hill in interleague action against former teammate Jerome Williams and the Phillies. The Angels are the biggest chalk on the board Tuesday, and they're 6-1 in Wilson's past seven starts, and 6-0 in his past six as a home favorite. In addition, the Phillies are 1-7 in their past eight interleague road games against a team with a winning record, and 5-16 in their past 21 overall against a team with a home winning percentage greater than .600. Wilson and the Angels should be big winners Tuesday.
MID-LEVEL VALUES (Salaries between $7,500 and $9,999)
If you spend big up top, you’re going to need some fillers to bring down your average per player salary. Check out these steals from the bargain bin:
Starlin Castro, SS, Chicago Cubs ($8800 vs MIL): Castro has hit safely in all 10 of his games in the month of August, hitting .415 (17-for-41) with two doubles, a homer and five RBI during the impressive span. And he is 10-for-21 (.476) with two doubles, two homers, four RBI and a 1.357 OPS in his career against Milwaukee Brewers SP Wily Peralta, who is 0-2 with a 6.39 ERA in two starts against the cubs this season.
T.J. House, SP, Cleveland ($8750 vs ARI): The Indians are big-time favorites against the visiting Diamondbacks in interleague play, and that means House could be a sneaky mid-level Daily Fantasy play. The Indians are 4-0 in House's past four home starts, and 5-1 in the past six as a favorite. In addition, the Indians have fared extremely well in interleague play at home, winning 19 of the past 26. They're also 24-6 in their past 30 games as a favorite of -151 to -200. That's great news for House.
Anthony Rizzo, 1B, Chicago Cubs ($9750 vs MIL): Rizzo has rolled up huge numbers against Peralta in his career, going 8-for-19 (.421) with a double, four homers, nine RBI and a 1.581 OPS. Rizzo has belted 17 of his 25 homers against right-handed pitching, and he has 33 extra-base hits (15 doubles, a triple, 17 homers) vs RHP. And he has a .918 OPS at home versus an .846 OPS on the road.
THE BARGAIN BIN (Salaries less than $7,500)
Ender Inciarte, OF, Arizona ($5250 at CLE): Inciarte heads into Tuesday's interleague game in Cleveland with an 11-game hitting streak in tow, going 15-for-49 (.306) with nine runs scored. He is a nice low-cost option who sees a ton of at-bats at the top of Arizona's lineup, and he comes with an extremely low price tag.
