Daily Dish - Monday
August 18, 2014
By Daniel Dobish
The weather outlook in Minneapolis looks pretty ominous, as persistent rain and thunderstorms will be passing through the Twin Cities area for most of the afternoon and evening. There is a pretty high possibility that this game is postponed due to rain, so it might be a good idea to avoid all Kansas City Royals and Minnesota Twins.
Monday, August 18, 2014 - TV schedule
8:10 p.m. - Kansas City at Minnesota (MLB Network)
8:15 p.m. - Cincinnati at St. Louis (MLB Network)
-- Each day we'll provide a look at MLB cities with outdoor venues which have a 30 percent or more chance of precipitation. It's rather risky to insert guys into your Daily Fantasy lineup in games with a good chance of delay or postponement.
8:10 p.m. - Baltimore at Chicago White Sox (30 percent chance of isolated t-storms)
8:10 p.m. - Kansas City at Minnesota (70 percent chance of heavy thunderstorms)
BIG-TICKET ITEM (Salaries $10,000 and Above)
Jordan Zimmermann, SP, Washington ($17750 vs ARI): The Nats are heavy chalk, but Zimmermann is well worth the huge Daily Fantasy salary against an overmatched Diamondbacks team. Washington is 7-0 in their past seven as a favorite, and 10-4 in their past 14 against a left-handed starter. In addition, they have won six in a row overall and they're 5-0 in their past five at home. All signs point to a Nationals victory, and Zimmermann will reap the benefits.
MID-LEVEL VALUES (Salaries between $7,500 and $9,999)
If you spend big up top, you’re going to need some fillers to bring down your average per player salary. Check out these steals from the bargain bin:
Justin Masterson, SP, St. Louis ($9850 vs CIN): Masterson is a huge Daily Fantasy value, especially on a night with a very light schedule. Last time out Masterson allowed just three hits with no walks and three strikeouts over seven scoreless innings. He'll be facing a struggling Reds club which is just 2-11 in their past 13 as a road underdog, 5-14 in their past 19 road games overall, and 18-39 in their past 57 trips to St. Louis overall.
Joe Mauer, 1B-C, Minnesota ($8650 vs KC): Mauer has owned Kansas City Royals LHP Jason Vargas over the years, going 10-for-24 (.417) with a double, six RBI and a .920 OPS. He is 7-for-21 (.333) with two doubles, two homers, three RBI and a 1.176 OPS in six games since coming off the 15-day disabled list Aug. 11. He continues to be a great value each day due to his mid-level Daily Fantasy salary, and therefore he is a must-start. Remember, though, the weather is touch-and-go, so check back frequently and be ready with a substitute in the even of a cancellation. Pittsburgh Pirates C Russell Martin ($8500) is a nice fallback option.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B, Boston ($9150 vs LAA): Petey has six hits in 18 at-bats (.333) with a double, two RBI and four runs scored over the past seven days, and he is hitting .339 with three doubles, a homer, seven RBI and 13 runs scored in the month of August. He should keep it going against Los Angeles Angels LHP C.J. Wilson, as Pedroia is a career .429 (9-for-21) hitter with three doubles, a homer, six RBI and a 1.214 OPS against the southpaw.
THE BARGAIN BIN (Salaries less than $7,500)
Ender Inciarte, OF, Arizona ($5000 at MIA): Inciarte extended his hitting streak to a career-high 16 games, going 23-for-71 (.324) with a double, triple, homer and five RBI with 11 runs scored during the impressive run. For a guy who has the longest active hitting streak in the majors, he continues to be an amazing value.
Kristopher Negron, SS-OF, Cincinnati ($6300 at STL): Negron is hot over the past seven days, going 8-for-20 (.400) with a triple, homer and two RBI, and he is hitting a solid .294 (15-for-51) in the month of August with two doubles, a triple, two homers, seven RBI and nine runs scored in the month of August. At this low salary, he is a great option at shortstop, and he can even be plugged in as an outfielder.
