DFS Bets - Farmers Insurance
January 23, 2018
By Austin Chen
The PGA Tour moves to sunny San Diego. The big news of the week is obviously the return of one Tiger Woods. I really like how DraftKings put Tiger as the 5th most expensive golfer unlike Fanduel who has him priced outside the top 30. People will play Tiger regardless of his salary, but at least DraftKings makes you think about it.
The Farmers Insurance Open will be played on both the North and South courses. The North course has bentgrass greens and measures out to 7,256 yards. Meanwhile the South course is one of the longest on tour measuring 7,698 yards and has Poa annua putting greens. Golfers who make the cut will be play the South Course 3 times and the North Course only once.
As always check the weather as it gets closer to tee time as wind and cold temperatures have been issues in past years.

Golfers To Consider For The Farmers Insurance Open
($9,000 and above on DraftKings)
Jon Rahm (DK:$11,800, FD: $11,200)
Coming off a playoff win, Jon Rahm will now head to Torrey Pines to defend his title. His play has been red hot with only 1 finish outside the top 7 in his last 7 starts. Rahm is in the top 5 for Birdie Or Better %, Par 5 Scoring, and SG:Tee To Green. Even as the highest price player on both daily fantasy websites, I will not be fading Rahm this week.
Other Golfers To Consider: Justin Rose
Brandt Snedeker (DK:$9,000, FD: $10,500)
By all accounts, Brandt Snedeker is finally healthy after a injury plagued 2nd half of 2017. His course history at Torrey Pines simply cannot be ignored. Snedeker has finished 9th, 1st, 19th, MC, 2nd, 1st, 9th, and 2nd in the last 8 editions of the Farmers Insurance Open. His recent injury history and high price tag should keep ownership low this week. This makes makes him a great large field GPP play as he has the type of game that can turn around rather quickly.
Other Golfers To Consider: Patrick Cantlay, Jason Day
Rickie Fowler (DK: $11,400, FD $12,100)
Life was very good for Rickie Fowler from 2010-2013 at Torrey Pines with no finishes outside the top 25. However since 2014, Fowler’s best finish at the Farmers Insurance Open is only T61. Even though Rickie Fowler is in top form, he is a fade for me as his salary is among the top 3 on both Fanduel and DraftKings this week.
Other Golfers To Consider: Hideki Matsuyama
($8,900 to $7,500 on DraftKings)
Tony Finau (DK:$8,700, FD: $10,900)
Tony Finau will be popular this week and for good reason. His game has greatly improved the past few years. This has led to a cut streak that would even make a Snapchat user jealous. Finau will try to make it 19 consecutive cuts made this week. He finished the 2017 season 10th in SG:Tee To Green and Birdie Or Better %. Although the course history sample size is small, Finau is 3-3 with T24 as his worst finish.
Other Golfers To Consider: Gary Woodland, Cameron Smith
Jhonattan Vegas (DK:$7,700, FD: $8,800)
This article cannot be completed without a trip to Vegas. Jhonattan Vegas has finished inside the Top 20 in 3 of his last 4 starts. Stats that jump out for Vegas so far this season are 30th SG:Tee To Green, 27th Par 5 Scoring and 45th SG: Putting. He has only missed the cut here once at the Farmers Insurance Open in 7 visits. It is time to let it ride with Jhonattan Vegas this week!
Other Golfers To Consider: Shane Lowry, James Hahn
Xander Schauffele (DK: $8,100, FD:$9,300)
Things have slowed down for Xander Schauffele since his heater to end the 2017 PGA season. He has only 1 top 20 in his last 5 starts. Xander looks like he is still trying to figure out his equipment as he signed a new deal with Callaway golf in 2018. He was switching between his old Taylormade clubs and the new Callaway clubs at the Sony Open. I am willing to wait until he gets things sorted out before considering Xander in my daily fantasy golf lineups. The local boy has missed the cut both times he has teed up at the Farmers Insurance Open.
Other Golfers To Consider: Patrick Reed, Jimmy Walker
(Below $7,500 on DraftKings)
Kyle Stanley (DK:7,400, FD: $9,300)
$7,400 is too cheap for Kyle Stanley on DraftKings if you consider his recent form. He has finished outside the top 25 only once in his last 10 starts. Stanley checks the box for SG: Tee To Green, SG: Approach The Green, and Par 5 Scoring. The recent course history is also good here with back to back top 25 finishes. Sometimes it it is hard to find a stud in the cheap tier, but it is not the case this week.
Other Golfers To Consider: Francesco Molinari
Beau Hossler (DK:$7,300, FD: $8,500)
Beau Hossler is your typical cheap GPP play as it comes with a high ceiling but also a low floor. He has 3 finishes inside the top 20s but also 2 outside the top 70 and a MC out of 7 starts in 2018. Hossler grew up about an hour away from Torrey Pines and finished T49 in his 1st attempt last year.
Other Golfers To Consider: Chesson Hadley, Keegan Bradley
Bill Haas (DK: $7,000, FD: $10,000)
At least he's consistent even when his form is bad. Haas has now missed 3 cuts in a row including last week at the CareerBuilder challenge where he is a course horse. Even at a very cheap price, I am not going anywhere near him right now.
Other Golfers To Consider: JB Holmes, Charley Hoffman
