DFS Bets - U.S. Open
June 12, 2018
By Austin Chen
This is an exciting week as the players head to New York for the 118th edition of the US Open. The tournament will be played at Shinnecock Hills for the 5th time. Retief Goosen was the last winner here back in 2004.
All three winners of the modern US Open have been 35 years or older so keep that in mind. The course is a par 70 and measures out to 7,445 yards. The putting surface is Poa Annua and fairways will have an average width of 41 yards. This course can play like a British Open when the winds pick up.
So don’t forget to check the weather as we near the tee off!

Before we break down the rest of the golfers at the US Open, everyone should go check out the RotoQL PGA Lineup Optimizer as it is a must when building your daily fantasy golf teams regardless of contest size or site.
Golfers To Consider For The US Open
($9,000 and above on DraftKings)
Dustin Johnson (DK:$11,700, FD: $12,400)
The argument last week was that we can spend down and get Brooks Koepka without losing too much. That strategy backfired as Dustin Johnson blew the field open at Memphis and won with a -19 under score. Once again DJ is the highest priced golfer and this is a course that he can lap the field especially if the wind picks up. Johnson checks the box as he is Top 20 in SG: Off The Tee, SG: Approach, Scrambling, SG: Putting and Green in Regulation %.
Other Golfers To Consider: Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy
Jordan Spieth (DK:$11,400, FD: $12,000)
Crazy to seem him in the GPP section but it is where we are at. I think you have to take a stand and either be overweight or underweight on Jordan Spieth this week. He is 18th in SG: Off The Tee, SG: Approach The Green, and SG: Around The Green which can arguably be his best season ever. The problem however is that he is 190th in SG: Putting. A putter can get hot at anytime, but will this be the week?
Other Golfers To Consider: Jon Rahm, Rickie Fowler
Justin Rose (DK: $10,300, FD $12,200)
I am fine with starting Justin Rose in cash games and Fanduel where he his is the 2nd most expensive golfer. However, I will be fading him in GPPs including the millionaire maker. Anything I read has Justin Rose as the most likely winner so he will be extremely popular. I realize his stats fit the course, but he is only the 7th most expensive. In a game where inches can make the difference each week, it is no given that Rose will finish Top 5.
Other Golfers To Consider: Brooks Koepka, Tiger Woods
($8,900 to $7,600 on DraftKings)
Phil Mickelson (DK:$8,600, FD: $10,600)
Phil Mickelson will try to win the one major that his haunted his career. Like many other US Opens, Mickelson finished 2nd in 2004 at Shinnecock Hills. He is 2nd in SG: Putting and 10th in SG: Approach. Finding the fairway will be the issue he needs to solve this week as he is only 131st in SG: Off The Tee. His price is very reasonable making him a great play on both DFS sites.
Other Golfers To Consider: Branden Grace, Sergio Garcia, Marc Leishman
Webb Simpson (DK:$7,700, FD: $10,700)
If Webb Simpson plays anywhere near the way he did at the Players, he can win the US Open. Despite his poor US Open history minus the one he won, his stats are too good this year to ignore. On a course that will require world class ball striking, there are few better than Webb this year. Simpson is 2nd in SG: Putting and Scrambling this season which is something we would have never guessed after the anchoring ban.
Other Golfers To Consider: Tommy Fleetwood, Bryson Dechambeau, Keegan Bradley
Paul Casey (DK: $8,000, FD:$10,500)
Talent is not the question for Paul Casey rather it is the tournament history. He has gone 9 years without a Top 25 finish at the US Open. People will see that his talent is greater than the players priced around him so he will be popular. RotoQL has him at a 2% chance of winning so if the public is on him, I am staying away,
Other Golfers To Consider: Hideki Matsuyama, Bubba Watson, Henrik Stenson
($7,500 and below on DraftKings)
Jimmy Walker (DK:$7,300, FD: $9,800)
Every since the 1st Major, Jimmy Walker has turned things around. He has finished inside the Top 25 in his last 6 tournaments. Walker has already won a major so the stage won’t be too bright. He is a stud play on DraftKings at only $7,300 as he has gained strokes on the field in 18 of his last 20 rounds.
Other Golfers To Consider: Zach Johnson, Steve Stricker, Chesson Hadley
Aaron Wise (DK:7,400, FD: $8,400)
The last time the PGA Tour played a course without any trees, it was Trinity Forest. Wise found fairway after fairway and came out on top at the end of the week. He is my favorite GPP play below $7,500. His game should translate well at Shinnecock Hills.
Other Golfers To Consider: Brandt Snedeker, Emiliano Grillo, Luke List
Rafa Cabrera Bello (DK: $7,200, FD: $10,000)
Rafa Cabrera Bello seems to be a guy that always gets a lot of hype only because of his price. Once again he is cheap at a major. Outside of a British Open T4, Bello has 0 T15s in 19 majors. There are simply players I like a lot more under $7,500 who may not have the name but provide at worst the same amount of upside as Rafa. His iron game is great but he is only 73rd in SG: Around The Green and Off The Tee. He is 100th in SG: Putting.
Other Golfers To Consider: Pat Perez, Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Jason Dufner
