Lawyer: Gary Player settles $1M dispute

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) - Gary Player's lawyer says the nine-time major winner has settled a dispute with a former friend over a $1 million transaction that took place in 1999.

Lawyer Rael Gootkin says Player and businessman Dave King have come to an out-of-court agreement. King once caddied for Player at the Masters. He threatened to sue the golfing great for $3.3 million and claim some of his South African assets for not paying back what he said was a loan. Player argued it was not a loan but does not deny that the transaction took place.

Gootkin told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the agreement should prevent the matter from going to court ``on the assumption that all the conditions are met.''

Gootkin says the settlement details are confidential.
