Furman dropping men's golf

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Furman University's Board of Trustees voted Friday to drop men's golf as a varsity sport after this season.

Carl Kohrt, the interim university president, said the trustees decided the school's money and resources in the athletic department were better used elsewhere. The school said the decision was based on several factors, including attendance, competitiveness and overall costs.

University officials said funds for men's golf won't go to other sports. The school will honor scholarship commitments to current players and those who've signed to play starting next year.

Furman leaders said no other sports would be discontinued.

The Paladins had been a longtime power in golf, winning 13 Southern Conference titles. The last one coming three years ago.

PGA Tour winner Brad Faxon played for the Paladins.
